Floor prep questions

Need advice on floor prep for my epoxy-coat kit I picked up at Lowes.

I previously painted my garage with one part behr epoxy paint. This was about eight years ago. I want to get it up so the epoxy- coat has a good even surface to bind to.

At Home Depot tool rental the guy suggested a floor sander with 12 grit sanding disks. Anyone have any experience with using something like that? Cost is very reasonable, at $40 per day plus about $20 in sanding disks.

I know grinding is considered the best, but I'm unsure if the old paint will grind away ok, or if it would gum up the diamonds?

If you used an epoxy originally, you should be able to get away with overcoating after some sanding. I do not understand a "one-part-epoxy" unless it is polyurethane which uses moisture in the air as the catalyst.

Sanding sounds like a good option, but 12 grit is very coarse. If you can sand and roughen the original coat I would think that about 50 grit would be better.

For applying our product, I would advise diamond grinding. How is the existing coating? just worn down or is it peeling? When applying over another coating it must be bonded very well to the substrate. If it is peeling, our coating will peel along with it. The existing coating is going to be very thin and should not be a problem diamond grinding. Call me if you want to discuss this in detail.
