Floor Question

My house ground floor is three steps higher than my garage. I therefore have two steps and a approx. 4 ft x 4 ft landing going into the kitchen. The contractor did a terrible job on this and left me with out of square, ratty fiber board steps and landing. I put masonite on the steps and landing to even things out. I am adding rubber Roppe treads to the stairs (adhered with cove base adhesive). The landing is another story. I'm thinking rubber over the masonite but what thickness, finish etc. I can cut from a 4 ft x 4 ft to make a good fit. Most of the stuff on Amazon is reprocessed car tires and may not be what I'm looking for. It has to be one piece to protect the masonite from moisture. Epoxy? I would like it to look decent since I went through the trouble of a nice floor in the garage. I am open to suggestions. The garage floor is Racedeck 2 x 2 black and white.

That would look awesome! Not sure that I could handle the install though. Last time I did ceramic tile was the shower stall in my old house and it was a 911 disaster. I don't know if a contractor would want to do such a small area. What size tiles?

You would have to put plywood or tile backer down. For such a small area it would be a good deal of work. What about peel and stick black and white tiles? I’d tile the landing and the riser if there is one and around the sides.
A decking paint can be used as well. Really depends how much work you want to put into it. I’d go with one foot tiles where you can. Don’t use either tile on the treads. Use some nice oak treads painted black.

I guess ceramic would not work over masonite? Only thing with 1 x 1 vinyl I would worry about water getting in between the joints and rotting the masonite. This one of my entry ways and I could have snow or rain on my shoes. Leaning more and more towards a rubber mat if I could find a quality one in one piece.

Eh? Cove base adhesive is great for cove base on porous wall surfaces... you want a rubber tread adhesive, or wide double- stick tape for stair treads. Nosing epoxy would be a good choice too.

If you want to glue anything to the landing, you should rip out the masonite, or cover it with a high- quality 1/4" ACX plywood. I'd put in the same plywood if you're thinking of a paint or other liquid coating also.

Roppe makes rubber tile to match the stair treads, but like the stair treads, it's not cheap. Horse stall mat rubber might be big enough to cover the entire landing in one piece.

Thanks for the input! I had decided to go with horse stall mat. Can you give me a link for the rubber tread adhesive? I have not had much luck with double sided tape over the years.

Thanks for the input! I had decided to go with horse stall mat. Can you give me a link for the rubber tread adhesive? I have not had much luck with double sided tape over the years.

I know that I have gotten advice to use double sided tape and special stair tread adhesive but i can't find either available without buying large quantity. I guess its made available to contractors and not so much general public. I continue the search, any help would be great. I most likely will return the Henry Cove base adhesive since I have been told it won't adhere to the smooth non porous substrate (is drywall pourous?). Another idea I had was to use a combination of adhesive with carpet tacks (maybe two rows 6 inches apart). Not sure if I can tack the bullnose part.

The cove base adhesive will work on drywall, but it's only intended to work on cove base.

Roppe recommends their 510 adhesive. You could also use:

Johnsonite 965
Flexco 3100
Burke BR-711
Taylor Pinnacle 2091

They all come in 1-gallon pails. Whether you can find them locally in your market, I'm not sure. Any flooring shop that does any commercial business should be able to provide some variety of rubber tread adhesive. You just need a basic tread adhesive, not a high-zoot commercial or epoxy.

You shouldn't need to run tacks through your stair treads- if you prep the substrate and apply the adhesive as directed the treads will be firmly bonded. I just noticed your treads were skinned with Masonite also, I'd recommend replacing or covering the Masonite with 1/4" ACX plywood. And I'd recommend the nosing epoxy as well, though it does complicate the process a bit.
