Here is an idea but it wouldn't really use any stain. Make a template of a star and transfer it to your floor and something that would look unique is to put a diamond blade on a circular saw and go about an 1/8" deep then use grout the line to give it a real custom look. If you use any chalk to make lines to cut out make sure to use orange chalk as it comes off much easier than blue or red which is more permanent.
