I have to add a partition wall before laying the floor. My choice of materials are out side the box to say the least. I can visualize it finished and do think it will function well and not lack visual appeal. As long as it doesn't look over done and suits the main space alright.
Brushed 1/16'th sheet stainless for the floor! With 6" dark slate tile border.
Our side door backs out in to the yard. The dogs sleeping quarters are on the inside of that door. We had to replace the floor 3x over time from dog floor and wall damage. When they get excited they bash the crates off of the wall and damage damage the drywall. Accidents also happen when training dogs and while they can't be let outside for a couple hours.
I will also border the lower section of walls with the same stainless. Approximately 3' or 3.5' up from the floor surface.
I'm thinking it will be super easy to keep clean with simple vinegar and water mostly. And look good.
Stainless steel is common for this purpose when its purposed for an animal pen. However I might be the first to use it on a floor. A floor in part of a main living space with tons of foot traffic. I haven't been able to find a single example online.
I'm an outside of the box thinker with most things in life and that isn't going to change. Often I get criticized for my ideas. Usually up until seeing the finished product. More often it goes from skepticism to complimentary.
But I admit this one, this has me a tiny bit reluctant. I'm not 100% yet if I should press ahead and go with my initial gut feelings on the floor. However I do like the idea more that anything else at this point. That said I share the house with my family.
I'll also be going against norms by using 2'x2' construction strand board for one side of the new partition wall. Again its outside norms. I regularly notice drywall gets refaced with lots of things that looks great in the end. And look nothing like drywall. However I'm not a big follower of trends, I do what I do unless its for someone else.
Finishing. I think if I were to paint the wall board a neutral white it would look more like I was being cheap, then trying to mask/hide it. I feel the opposite will be the best approach. Better to accentuate it and put it out there then try to hide it. I had no intention of doing that. Or none of this would be a subject, I would of simply gone with one form of drywall in the beginning and been done with it.
I plan to simply sand the boards to clean them up then hit them with a double coat of satin clear. The door I'm using is wood with 8 beveled glass panels. The wood portions of the door turned a real nice silvery grey. It should contrast well and add a touch of understated class to the entire portrait. And balance out the overall look of the room. Its a quality door that was left outside for years, all 4 seasons snow sun, sleet. I'm hoping I'll be able to save that natural silver finish. I'll try lightly sanding it with 280 and 320 and see how it goes first.
