Flooring in Northeast Ohio

I'm looking for some advice. I live in Northeast Ohio (30 miles East of Cleveland in the heart of the snowbelt). My wife and I just had our home built and now I'm looking to have some fun with the garage. I don't do any sort of mechanic work or anything - our garage is purely a place to park our vehicles and my motorcycle. Sure - I have a workbench and a place to tinker around too. With that being said - I'm looking for some ideas for the floor. I'm leaning towards the racedeck style of flooring, but am wondering how it will do with the amount of rain/snow/salt I'll be dragging into it daily. Ideally I'd like to do a black/white checkerboard pattern with a red border that will match my Triumph motorcycle. I've heard that my type of daily use can be hard on the white tiles, but I don't mind having to keep it clean. My main concern is water/salt/general crud getting through and getting trapped under the tiles. I do have a drain in the middle of the garage floor and the garage floor itself does have a gradual slope to this drain. Would I just leave a tile out in the middle where the drain is?

Any advice/suggestions?

Take a look at RaceDeck Free Flow. You can leave that in place and hose off all the salt and it should run to the drain just fine. White anything shows all. But again its easy to clean. I have a sample of racedeck I can send you or contact Jennifer at Racedeck and she will send you one out the did for me. Email her here [email protected] or 800-457-0174. Great people to deal with. !!

I live in Euclid and grew up in Painesville, so I am right in the same area as you.

The RaceDeck will work good here, the salt, slush, snow won't hurt it. I would recommend calling Jorgen at RaceDeck and see what tiles he recommends, they are very helpful. The freeflow would allow all the salt/crud/water flow through to the floor, you would probably just have to vacuum it out occasionally. I think the majority of the water and all the salt would just sit on top of the regular RaceDeck so you would need to mop it occassionally in the winter.

It is hard to beat the look/quality of RaceDeck, I bought a bunch to do my 3200sq ft shop, I will be putting it down within the next couple weeks, I cannot wait to see the finished project.

tpshotta -

Hi- give me a call anytime during the week and I am happy to discuss all the options we have for garage flooring.

Some answers to your concerns -
"My main concern is water/salt/general crud getting through and getting trapped under the tiles - All of our flooring systems are engineered to allow air and liquids to flow freely under the floor, water will not get trapped and air will circulate.

I do have a drain in the middle of the garage floor and the garage floor itself does have a gradual slope to this drain. Would I just leave a tile out in the middle where the drain is? - FreeFlow tile will snap into any style RaceDeck so you can place them directly over a drain. The freeflow will look like a drain grate.

I've heard that my type of daily use can be hard on the white tiles, but I don't mind having to keep it clean. RaceDeck is made with a premium High-Impact Polyprophelene' and is not porous. As tough as it is, any light color floor will show dirt on it. Unlike some epoxies and VCT tiles, tires will not stain yellow. One option is our Tuffshield line.

Thanks again,
