Flooring on ceiling

I'm looking to install engineered bamboo on the ceiling of my garage. It's currently exposed to the joists. Spacing between the 2x10 joists are 16 inches and they run perpendicular to the laying direction. The t&g engineered planks are 48 inches long. So my question is do I need to still install a "sub ceiling" to install these? Or can I mail them directly into the joists?

Thanks that's what I was thinking since this isn't a functional floor but strictly for aesthetics.
