I am getting ready to build a 12X30 loft across one end of my workshop for storage. The room below the loft will have 2X4 walls. Will 2X10 floor joists on 16" center be adequate across the 12' span or should I use 2x12s. I'm thinking about using 1/2" OSB plus 1/2" plywood for the floor of the loft. Does anyone see a problem with my plan that I overlooked???

I'd use some 3/4" panels for the floor, whether it be OSB or plywood. Panels made for the floor will have T&G sides to help lock them together for more strength.

As far as the floor joists, it really depends what you are storing up there.

are your framing 2x4s up to the added load? Most are not built to add lofts or attic storage.

You might check with an expert.

I have built 3 house and shops, so I'll throw in my opinion. Use Floor trusses. A web design using 2x4's. They are stronger, span more, and give a much wider nailing surface. Plus they are open web, so you can run wiring , plumbing, HVAC, etc. All without having to drill holes. You can install lighting very easy. Many benefits to them. Only downfall, they are more money. But, I have always found benefits greatly outweigh extra cost. Also, if your going to put alot of heavy objects in loft, use 1 1/8 in osb flooring. very strong and sturdy. Sometimes overkill is best.....JMHO....
