Need a recomendation for an online dealer for flourescent light fixtures. I need about 9 four bulb 4' units for my garage build and don't want Home Depot ****. I need cold weather ballasts.

Any GJ sponsors or recommended dealers would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Home Depot, Lowes, and Menards all sell low temperature florescents. Don't be surprised if you buy online and end up paying a lot more for the same cheap lights.

That was my experience. Saw stuff on line more than Home Depot. Ended up with Lithonia T8 fixtures at Home Depot. So far so good.

It's not the fixtures, it's the ballasts. I have a bunch of cheap 2 bulb shop lights, never gave over $18 for any of them - all work fine. I would not buy online, easier to return a defective unit to the local store. All of my cheap lights start in 0F weather.

I intend to replace the two bare bulbs in the 2-car garage with fluorescent fixtures, but does anyone have a recommendation as to how many would be needed? These will be, of course, for general illumination so I don't want to burn the retinas. I thought 4 ceiling-mounted, 2-bulb units would be sufficient. Then again I could be wrong.

For general garage use, I think 2 4-bulbs is sufficient... I switched the bulbs at my mother's house for two 48" 2-bulb fixtures and it is plenty for their needs. Four would be even better at eliminating dark spots. I would not go with more than 4 fixtures for a "normal" 2-car garage... if anyone convinces you otherwise, buy the 2 or 4 and try them first before you go adding more :)

What KYWildcat said. T8 all the way.

I would strongly recommend that you go to your local electrical supply place to get your fixtures.

I can't imagine what it would have cost, to ship all sixteen of my 8-foot long, four-bulb T8 Lithonia fixtures, if I had bought them online.

Not to mention that the packaging these fixtures come in is not well suited to individual shipment, and some would surely get wrecked in transit.

In addition it is highly unlikely you will beat your local supply house's pricing, on the bulbs.

I have a Home Depot 10mins from my house , Plus a few other hardware and some electrical supply houses by me.I can say I am lucky to not have to shop online for most things. I like to shop local. When decide to redo my Garage lighting I will refer to this thread. This is a great site for all a things garage related.

What's wrong with Home Depot lights? I just installed 1152w worth here (across 3 zones) and couldn't be happier. Instant-on, no buzz, FM, etc... . Just make sure to get the GESB spec'ed ballast.

Jon,
How about a local electrical supply house ? Personally I cant imaging buying lighting fixtures online. If you have a problem ....... :(
The only electrical supply house within 40 miles of me has a sign over the front door. "Contractors only, not open to general public" I tried to get some lighting fixtures there anyway.. they refused to sell to me. A contractor friend called them up to get a quote... they were more expensive than HD for the same thing from Lithonia. Off to HD I go!

I bought the Lowes 8 ft T-8 with low temp ballasts, Thought I'd need 8, hung the first 4 staggered and tested them, I took the other 4 back.
You get what you pay for in flourescents, Ive got a whole garage done in cheap ones, Ill be redoing it soon cause the ballasts are ****. Might just get some new ballasts for the place.
