I have a 24 X 40 shed that I am planning on installing some flourescent lights in. I have seen the typical positioning of the tubes running lengthwise with the building. My problem however is that the company that drywalled the ceiling wanted to strap the ceiling with 1X4's prior to putting the drywall up as they said it would make a better job. So now it would be easier to install the flourescent fixtures crossways in the shed and not lenghtwise as I can hit the strapping a lot easier than trying to find the bottom of the rafters to screw the fixture to. Any ideas if it is okay to run the tubes crossways as opposed to lengthwise ???

You might need more of them running across the width. Have you thought about nailing a 1X2 board to the studs and using it to mount the lights? I would think that with a width of 24, three rows of lights should really do the job - task lighting not withstanding.

My set up is 28 X 32 and I have three rows of lights going in the 32 direction. They are set up so the two outside rows light up the walls and areas in front of them with the middle row lighting up the middle and overlapping the end rows. I did add two more at the end of the garage to light up the end wall a little more. I turned those sideways to the main rows of lights. From overhead, the light pattern looks like an E.

Hope this helps.

Get a Stanley stud finder at walmart - they work great. You want to anchor those lights solid!
