Looking at putting some flourecent strip lights in my garage. I see the narrow T8 fixtures are cheaper than the standard width fixtures. Are there any disadvantages to these types of fixtures?

Other than they are obsolete, bulky and more expensive to run than the myriad of LED options out there? There are hundreds of lighting threads here about every type of light in every type of application, start reading...

I used t8 in my garage 3 or 4 years ago.
I bought the 2 lamp fixtures, with wrap around lenses, new, about 2 years prior for $15 per fixture.
I was planning on buying LED bulbs and just using the fixtures , stripping the ballasts and giving them to my electrician friend
I got a good deal on a case of bulbs about a year later. I think $3 a bulb.
if I run out of bulbs, burn out ballasts I will change to led. I have 4 spare fixtures tho, so in my life time, I wouldn't bet any money on changing , unless I start to spend a lot more time out there

The only reason to pick Fluorescent today is you got them for free and you will only run them a few hours a week.

Note they are showing up for free on Craig’s list often.

The narrow ones have the two lamps very close together. This makes installing them and removing them a little more challenging because you cant get your fingers between the two lamps to get a good grip on them before you try to spin them out of the sockets. Other than that, no major differences.

I have these exact bulky and expensive fixtures in my garage and have been meaning to replace them for awhile now, just haven't gotten around to it... What kind of LED units/replacements do you run, or would you recommend instead of the outdated T8 fluorescent strips?

Other than the fact they are florescent, a disadvantage is that if there is a box on the ceiling, the fixture won't be wide enough to cover it. They come close to covering a single gang box, but not quite.

I used 20 of these fixtures (https://www.beeslighting.com/LSS2XT8USE4803) in my garage with 2200 lumen T8 stype single ended LED tubes. They were $16 when I got them. I found them easy to install, in 4 rows of 4 ganged together, and two two strip rows. I like these narrow fixtures better than the wide ones, they look cleaner and are less bulky. I Plan to get several more for my shed.
