Around here, the local parts stores will recycle oil. Nobody will take antifreeze, brake fluid, hydro, etc. Any resources I am missing? What do you all do?

I don't know where "Around here" is but, in my neck of the swamp, we have a local household hazardous waste dump facility that takes all that stuff and more. Check your local government websites (city, county, etc).

Around here there is a hazardous waste company that will take the stuff for $3 a gallon. It ***** paying for it but I'm not gonna dump it somewhere and I don't want it sitting around in a container with my little kids around.

Contact the sanitation dept. for your area and they should be able to point you in the right direction. In some areas they only accept hazardous waste drop offs a few times each year.

Do you have Advance Auto? I'm on the east coast, and mine now accepts brake fluid, just go in the back and pour it in the motor oil vat. ATF, too.

I forget if one of the big box auto parts stores is taking anitfreeze, I think one of them is.

My county has a hazmat drop off place, but it's a pain to deal with. Again, ask your local county gov't, there's somebody who knows what you're talking about, what to do about it, and is eager to not have this stuff dumped into the watershed/drinking water, etc etc.

We have a very user friendly recycling and hazardous waste depot that takes everything ... no questions asked. I tend to label my liquid wastes (motor oil, carb cleaner, etc.) but they don't seem to care. It's in and out as fast as you can go.

Our facility requires driver license id to verify you live in the area covered and that you are not visiting too often with large amounts which would indicate a commercial enterprise.

If you race you can take it to a local track, most tracks take Oil, Brake Fluid, and coolant. My employer actually did a hazardous waste day, not as good as the town, but since I missed the town version it was great. Very convenient too.

El,
I cannot imagine in this day and age that any developed area would not have a program for disposing this type of waste. Pick up the phone and call your local county offices and ask. The internet is great for a lot of things, but after a few minutes of online searching, if you cant find it, the good old telephone always works :)

I can second the Advance Auto recommendation (for the Northeast at least). The ones near me take both oil and antifreeze. I haven't asked if they'll take any other fluids.

Ive always had good luck with the chain auto parts stores. If you think the minimum wage workers care much about looking up oddball parts, try taking a few gallons for disposal when they have other customers in line. They just point toward the disposal drum and anything you dump in there is fair game. If Ive got an engine's fill of coolant I keep it separate but small quantities and everything else gets mixed.

The city has a recycling site that takes oil and antifreeze, separately of course.

For small amounts (a few ounces) of other petro-chemicals I just dump it in my oil jug.

Our city will take oil and trans fluid and coolant. I've always wondered what the correct way to dispose of brake fluid is? I have a few gallons I've collected over the years because I've never known the right way to dispose of it. Is it oil based and can go with oil?

Try a local Radiator Shop.

All of my Oil, ATF, Brake Fluid and such gets put into the Oil Recycling Bucket then goes to O'Reileys. Antifreeze goes to the Hazardous Waste Dept. Most Transfer Stations will take it too.

Okay, so a few phone calls later, I found out my county does have a hazardous waste recycle day -- they just can't tell when the next one will be. Sort of a pain in the ***.
Maybe I'll just take one of my Travis County friends down there with me. Pffffft.

AdvanceAuto takes everything.

I put coolant in one bucket, and everything else in another. No need to separate different oils. When the buckets are full, I take them and dump them on my way to work one day.

Flushed my coolant system 3 weeks ago and brought 10 gallons into them of coolant and water. They said they basically take anything from a car! Doesn't get much easier than that!

This was in Orange County NY
