that's a pretty fair price if it's in good shape and you get a nice probe/lead set and a case, not a steal of a deal but not overpriced by any means... if you're looking for a good meter, go for it. it's for sure better than any multimeter you'd find new for $55 at the hardware store.

That's not bad if it is the entire kit, with HV probe, case, leads and manual. They are the best common value in meters. Yea they don't have all the wiz bang features that some folks THINK they need but they will do 90% for the average guy. Extremely accurate, and dang near bomb proof (literally). If you do purchase one, make sure you check that the fuses are good.

I also wouldn't call it a "steal" of a deal, that is right around, if not a few bucks less than what a kit on ebay cost shipped these days. I bought mine back when they were cheaper.

First post as I'm mostly a lurker but this topic (multimeters) is something I know a lot about. The price is about right. My guess is you can haggle him a bit but not much. About three years ago you could get them for $20-30 like new for the whole kit. Then if I remember correctly Dave at eevblog did a show on these meters a few years back and their price has risen. The fm denotes it was military surplus and has true rms. Most people didn't know this model has true rms because the regular 27 does not, but Dave let cat out the bag. These are very very very robust meters. The biggest thing is they are super safe with proper input protection and hrc fuses (unlike the craftsman rebadged Extech ****). They aren't the best but if you want a safe reliable inexpensive meter and don't mind used these are a good deal.

I've been using one almost everyday for the past few years and it's been flawless besides having to re solder one of the test lead jacks after it got dropped. My only complaint is that it is pretty large and a little heavy but that's a small price to pay for durability in my opinion.

I was an aircraft electrician in the Army during the late 1980's and early 1990's. I used this meter on a daily basis and thought it was a great meter.

They are extremely accurate for what they check. Other than not having frequency and capacitance check function, they are just as good as any modern FLUKE meter.

Once thing to be careful on these surplus 27/FM Flukes, is to make sure that both fuses are installed/included and are not blown. The fuses themselves are high dollar and will cost just as much as the current going $50-$60 price for the meter itself. There has been a few buyers that have picked these up with missing and/or blown fuses.

I got my kit on ebay also thanks to this forum. earliest date I saw on it was 86, Air Force surplus. It came with both fuses intact and a spare for about that same price. Any haggling you do should count as a bonus, if its in good working order its worth that price.

Those fuses should not be $50-60. That being said they can be $10-15 a piece, which is not insignificant.

I agree that $50 is a good price for that meter if it's in decent condition. All the advice given here is good as well, especially the information about the fuses.

If I needed a DMM myself ( I already have several Flukes ) I'd jump on that.
