Fluke 287 vs 289

This reason I like this is because they have the trend capture feature (graphing) So you can actually see whats happening. Im going to be using this for automotive purpose. Like reading the sensor, duty cycle and ect.

But what gets me. Is I don't know which one to get.

When i got it, my dad asked "why in the hell did you pay that much for a meter, my 20 year old craftsman works just fine?"

Two days later, the ranger quit (as usual, that parts nothing new), and I used it to map out the injectors, and found two that were pulsing funny. I grabbed two injectors out of the two bad engines we had for it (see a pattern here?) and put them in, and it ran fine. I told him after his remark, he owed me a steak dinner when we went into town that night, and he had to admit his old Craftsman wasn't up to snuff.

It shows max, low, and average, and is more useful for general automotive stuff, IMHO. Each to their own, though.

I don't know anything about graphing and that. My Vag-Com shows me live graphs and stuff, but i can't interpret it aside from engine temps and revs and stuff. Way too complex for me at the moment.

+1. Car guys all know this and purchase accordingly. Other trades, well check the features of other Fluke meter offerings for your niche.

hi jesse if you're looking for a graphing multimeter by fluke you'll have to get a used one i believe it was an 867-b the 287 and 289 plot trends which i'm pretty sure means from data which is not live i talked to an engineer at fluke when these 2 came out and he was about as clear as mud you might want to talk to carlos at aes in fresno i got my fluke88 and 98-2 scope from him and he specializes in all kinds of goodies (some of which are custom-made) to work with meters. scopes and scanners john wilson

the # for aes wave is 559-292 3533 i'm just learning how to use a computer so i'm a bit clumsy my 10-year -old daughter has to help me! incidentally, the 867-b has been out of production for about 5 years but shouldn't be hard to find the 98 automotive scopemeter has also been out of production for awhile but carlos comes across some nice trade-ins when i learn how to take pictures on here i'll show you my fluke/pomona/aes goodies

I thought the 287 and 289 work just like a Oscilloscope. Cause I used a fluke oscilloscope that the school had it was great at looking for glitch in sensor and you would see it in the pattern.

FWIW, Fluke is no longer providing replacment batteries for the Fluke 98 scope. AES has found some batteries sources that will work. Give Carlos a call. Good folks at AES/WAVE; I've spent a good chunk of coin there over the past 7 years.

I talked to another engineer at Fluke yesterday after my last post and he said that the 287 and 289 are not automotive products. He explained the problem as being a "lower sampling rate" and said the display would "not even sorta kinda" look like the one from a scope.
