Fluke 77 Repair

I have a Fluke 77 that was "liberated" from my decommissioning ship when I was in the Navy about a decade ago and the display is going out. Where can I send it to be repaired?

Send it back to the US Navy; they'll fix it for free!

Just so you know, the Navy told us to pitch them because of the Decom process. Said it cost more to transfer them somewhere than to buy new. Most of us borrowed them long term.

Fluke meters have a major problem in that the LCD display is connected to the circuit board by some rubber conductive strips. The contacts to the display gets dirty and segments go out.

It's simple to remove the display, clean the contacts and then re-attach the display unit. Fluke won't stand behind their products without proof of original purchase.

I've had this problem on my expensive Fluke meters but not on my $1.99 HF meter

Maybe Fluke should license their display technology from Harbor Freight

I have the same problem with my Fluke 77. A few segments are missing. Cleaning the contacts might be a good first move. However in my case the LCD display itself is shot up and needs replacement.

Display contacts are a common problem. Check out their website, last I was there was over 3 years ago working for my previous employer, you might be able to buy a new display online.

Unless the LCD is cracked or broken, all it may need is a good cleaning. If that doesn't work try one of the display kits from this guy. Mine came with the new gray elastomers and worked like a champ.

For my experience, the 80 series seem to have the worst fading display problems.

I had a display problem with a Fluke some years ago. At that time, I bought a kit from Fluke to repair it. As I recall, the contacts behind the display were replaced with improved contacts. The cost of the kit was minimal.

I've done two Flukes with the kits. The Fluke 87 kit I used also had an upgraded backlight assembly. The new backlight was brighter and whiter than the original.

I cleaned mine with rubbing alcohol, it works fine now! If you're not sure how to do it, check on You Tube.

Likewise, I cleaned the zebra strip in my 79 more than 10 years ago with alcohol and it's been fine ever since.

I have a couple of Fluke 77's that have to be around 25 years old. They work just fine, but I'm glad I read this thread so I can be prepared if the display goes south.
