Anyone familiar with the LCD screen fading problem on Fluke meters?

I just picked up a Fluke 87 in nice overall condition, but the LCD screen is hard to read- about 1/2 of the display is faded out.

I found this kit on Ebay- looks promising:

But before I drop another $28 on this I wanted to see if there's a DIY solution or something else I should check.

Thanks!

Rig.

When you clean the contacts use isopropyl rubbing alcohol and a lint free cotton cloth. You do not want to have any lint or static from synthetic fabrics when working inside your meter.

This is interesting to me. Where I worked a few years back, my department was responsible for managing cal certs for all the test equipment at 2 facilities. We had well over 200 87's in inventory and I can say I have never seen a display fail that could not be attributed to being dropped or some other mis-use.

I installed a "upgrade" kit to my Fluke 87 years ago (ordered from Fluke). I remember the screen was a greenish originally and the newer was a brighter/lighter grayish color. Also I believe the digits were slightly larger.

Well, I just cleaned the strips with alcohol, let them dry and put it all back together.

The display is 100% right now!

I'll wait and see if it fades out again before buying the kit.

Thanks for the Youtube link kiall1987- I owe you a pint or two!!!

my 85 had the same problem, I cleaned the contacts but they would fade out again after a little while, very frustrating. I replaced the strip and it has been good for the past 2 years. it works. I think I paid 20 bucks for it back then.

Another example of paying premium prices for perceived premium quality just to be let down. (yes, I also have a 87 and have had to clean the LCD contacts).

Maybe Fluke should consult with Harbor Freight. I've never had to clean contacts on their $1.99 DMM's display.
