Looks like a standard 87V to me, and they can be had new for $365.75 w/free shipping (here). Used for less.

The 87V is an industrial use meter (industrial electricians, so electrical and some electronics needs), while the 88V is geared toward automotive use (inductive pickup accessory allows for measuring RPM for example).

Just be aware, if you don't buy it from an Authorized Distributor, Fluke can reject any warranty claims (gets classified as a grey market unit, even though the S/N checks out & they know they sold it).

Doesn't mean such a meter will be rejected, but it has happened to people before (seems to depend on the person that you get when requesting an RMA from Fluke).

Also, "Lifetime Warranty" means the meter's lifespan, which Fluke defines as 7 - 10 years (i.e. past 7 if there's parts available/still being manufactured to fix/replace it with).

So do be aware of Amazon purchases.

I believe u but thats the dumbset thing ive heard. Its like Fluke is trying to help their distributors(who typically charge more) make more money by forcing customers to buy from them so they can have a valid warranty. Seems to me that that practice would be illegal!

And the 'lifetime warranty' thing is deceptive. i love Fluke and have several of their meters and plan on buying a few more but it sounds like their customer service is sub-par!

Simple really, just using price controls in order to keep their profits (margins) high.

As to whether this is good or not, that depends on your POV. Good for the executive board and investors (assuming the company is run properly), but not necessarily for customers.

automotive or little stuff around the house, im no electrician.

Overkill for that....

I have a couple of the HF DMM's around the house. They are either free or $5.

They work quite fine.

If I need a good DMM, I bring home my Fluke 179

I was gonna say the sme thing but ididnt want to burst his bubble. Yes the 88V is way overkill for a begginner. I have an 87V now but when i first started out in the electrical field i had a number of cheap crappy meters.nfor basic automotive electrical almost any meter will do!!

Upon further research it looks like amazon IS an authorized seller as they're listed on fluke's site.

Seen that before, and also have heard of a few instances where things went wrong.

Suspect it had to do with the actually seller was an un authorized 3rd party seller that was advertising through Amazon, not actually sold by Amazon itself (much more obvious/bigger issue from eBay sources).

Buyers just need to be careful IMHO, and there are authorized sellers that usually have similar prices as Amazon. So a solution to the problem without having to research the seller to death do exist.

TransCAT.com or Tequipment.net for example are usually around the same prices as Amazon, and there's no potential warranty issue. Just seems easier to buy from these sources if possible IMHO.

Main goal was to indicate that just because it's a Fluke product, doesn't mean Fluke will warrant the meter should it be needed, if it wasn't purchased through their authorized channels.
