Fluke Multimeter ... any reason not to ... ?

Just turn it back on by pushing one of the buttons after 'auto power off' has turned the DMM off.

That is, I have the DMM dial turned to, say dcV, and auto power off turns the DMM off, if I just want to use dcV again is there any reason not to turn the DMM back on just by pushing a (any of the) buttons?

This will of course run the battery down quicker if done on a regular basis, but other than that .... ?

I have a Fluke 179 with that feature. I've had it about 8-10 years. I've replaced the battery once.

You will wear out meter leads faster than the battery.

I suspect you are right about wearing out.

But I ask this question because this way to turn the DMM on (I have an 87V), does not appear to be documented in the manual anywhere - which sort of makes me wonder (maybe its too obvious!?) .

And sometimes of course, if you only have one hand free, it is easier to turn the DMM on by pushing a button than it is to turn the large central dial.

Do it all the time that way. Meter seems to turn off right as you go to make a measurement. Like its waiting for you to pick up the leads.

On most models you press the yellow button as you power it up to disable the auto power off.

Indeed you can - and that at least is documented in the manual.

But turning the meter back on by just pushing a button (rather than turning the dial) is not documented - and I am wondering why.

I don't know why but I doubt it's doing any harm to the meter doing it this way.

I'm not worried about the battery.

I just wondering about why this way of turning the meter on (pushing a button rather than turning the dial) is not documented. At least not in the latest incarnation of the manual - it is documented in an earlier version.

I have the same one... had it for 8 years and just recently replaced the battery.... i wouldn't worry about it

A couple of the guys I work with turn them back on like that. Now that I know it will turn off the Auto-Off feature, I show them that!
Which means it won't go to sleep on them, which means they won't push the Button to turn it back on!
