Hooe this is the right forum to ask. Plumbing a shower in my shop. On the brass fnpt fitting, do I use tape or dope or both or neither?

Tape or dope is fine. Most will probably say both and I doubt it hurts anything but if it leaks without one or the other, I’d say your problem lies elsewhere. I’ve been a master plumber for 40+ years so WTF do I know. Don’t apply dope to female threads, male only.
That's awesome. Thank you a ton. Cheers

This is one of those questions that will get so many different answers. Quality cut threads, quality tape and a pass of dope should sort you out. Some will say you have to work the tape into the threads after wrapping 4 times. I’ve seen some twist the tape into a thin floss shape and just apply that into the groove. I would listen to anyone that has done this for decades because when you screw up once, you learn quickly how to do it right.

FNPT or FPT would refer to the Female side of the fitting (NPTF has a completely different meaning). The female side should have clean threads only (except for possibly primer when needed with anaerobic sealants). You want to use tape of dope or both on the male side only.
