I recessed troffer lights between my rafters and boxed out the sides my question is can I use rigid foam above the lights to box it out and provide some insulation 8f9c7227141f16f83eb79e3dd10f160a.jpg

The units are not ic rated and the rigid foam would not touch there would be about a 3" space

I would say no, they are designed not to have insulation above them.

Assuming they are 4- 4' T12 with a standard ballast you are looking at about 175 watts per fixture. I would assume the fixture would be cool or slightly warm to the touch and that you would be fine.

Looks like you are putting together a really nice space there.

Assuming standard F32T8 or F40T12 fluorescent fixture: As long as you maintain the 3" air gap it will be fine. The hottest temperature is the surface of the bulb near the lamp ends which will reach about 145° F.

You can box it above with drywall or plywood with space above as already suggested. Insulation would be placed over the boxes in the attic area. Foam would be a concern for fire unless covered with something.
