Pretty cool vice Foose built for his dad. No info on it but I'm sure the vise enthusiasts will enjoy identifying the original that was used to make it.

75% (I'll even say 95%)of the guys here will not use a vise four times a year and/or then only to hold something just a bit too torqued to hold it by hand. I know we're all the village smithy in our heads, but thems the realities of it all... The vises are handy holds and that's about it. AND, if you scar much more than the jaws on a vise, you have failed.

So... Either you're(collective as in Ya all) the casual user here, or you know how to use a vise, or you're a neanderthal that thinks a vise is a kind of stationary hammer.

Hahaha. What in the heck are you talking about, Ducks? This has nothing to do with the subject the OP posted.

I get you were responding to the "a vise you can't use" comment but I'm thinking the above comment was a whiff. You cannot be thinking that a vise (one that's actually mounted - because we know some guys are collectors) that's even used as little as 4 times a year - is an art piece. That's laughable.

Does that make my torque wrench an art piece? I haven't used in in 2015, yet. Haha.

I like the vise. Thanks for posting.

I guess I am in the minority. Although Chip Foose is probably a nice guy, I hate what he does to most cars.

My favorite detail on this vise is a small one. I absolutely love the recessed Allen fasteners used to attach the vise to its custom base.

I agree that vise is too pretty to use, but it is beautiful.

I have never understood the all Foose hate. How many people are there that can take a car from concept to finish and are capable of doing damn near every step? I mean the man can think it, draw it, form the metal, weld it, and paint it. I don't care for the "big wheel" concept that is so popular with him and others these days, but otherwise anything Chip would like to do to my car would be welcomed.

Is it wrong to feel a little turned on , by a vise?

You mean.....get big wood for big metal?

Naw.........It's OK! Especially for a Parker, which this is.

The detail I like, besides the great finish on the vise, is how the plate that it is fastened to, follows the contours of the base of the vise. Almost like it was routed.

It was in response to the art comment.
I think he was serious. I use my tools and would not hesitate to use that vise. Would I take extra care? Absolutely. Is it art? Absolutely. Does that make it something to idolize and not use? Not a chance in my world.

Okay, I got ya now!

Have you guys seen the 2015 Ridler winning 65 Chevy Chip and his crew built? The most impressive thing about the whole display was the stock 65 Chevy in the background, with all the modifications laid out on the white painted stocker so you could actually see what was done to the show car. That gives anyone a true picture of the amount of metal work done to the show car to get it to the award winning level.

It'd be cool to see both cars, in person.

It's neat and very well put together, but I don't like how they rounded almost every surface on the main body. I wonder how they made the screw eye, thinking they just turned the stock cylindrical shape down to size. Same for the screw retainer, probably custom made. :dunno:

I don't understand the Foose hate either. I watched many a show of his where he has built a car for someone that deserved it, and when they cry, he's be having tears in his eyes right along with them.

As far as the vise.......artwork, sure is, but I bet it gets used by his dad. He probably just takes better car of it than most. Plus that pic is probably right after it was made.

As far as mine, I have three different sized Desmond Stephans, and they all get used, but I try to keep them looking nice. The two smaller ones, I just recently had flour blasted, and still need to get them painted. But my larger one......it gets used all of the time. There is no slop in it, and many times I have tightened it just a tad with a mallet.

I know that on the Foose vise, I'd love to have that base, That is all machined out and looks like it was done from a solid bar.

It looks like they chopped the top, laid the windshield back some, added the scallops into the front fender, of course he changed the bumpers and cut them down plus pulled them in, but it looks like the door has been lengthened a considerable amount. I love the looks of it over the stock version.

It's sitting on a 2009 Vette "chassis" which was lengthened some. The '65 was shortened like 14". The roof was shortened and dropped.

This car looks like something that could be on the street - in production - in 2015. The proportions are spot on. The only thing I'm not a fan of is the wheels... but what do I know? :D

That's why the door looks lengthened then. Makes sense now.

As far as the wheels......nope, not a fan of them either. They are not bad, but they are too busy looking for me. I think it would look better with a set of Torque Thrust II's on it myself  But if I was handed the keys to it, I'd roll in it just as it is.

If the vise is one his company CNC from a block of steel that is kinda cool.( the lead screw end and the handle ends... Or the anvil shaped end it all looks goofy and out of place on a streamlined shape) But if they just hacked up an antique vintage vise then that is bs and sacrilege!

People same the same thing about hacking up old cars. Nothing wrong with smoothing up an old vise. It's something Foose customized for his dad :rocker:

Thanks for the post, I had never heard of these guys. The craftmanship is amazing, just wow. The aesthetics and sense of style are just deplorable. Ick. And that goes for the vise and what they do to those poor cars. Put me in the camp that just doesn't get it. I sure wish I had the abilities/dedication on display there though!
