I have a Phillips 66 sign thats been hanging in my shop for years. The post for it has been laying behind the shop for just as long. With the recent gas station talk, I've made the decision to go ahaed and put it up in front of my shop. The sign itself is about 6' by 5' and is really more than one person wants to life. The pole is steel....about 20' high overall and probably weighs about 500 to 700 pounds. What would you fellas recommend for footings? How deep? Thanks

Does the post have a plate on the bottom that sits on the top of the footing, or is the post buried in the concrete? Does the post go up through the sign to the top of it? What is the diameter and thickness of the post?
Photos?
If no soils report, do you have any signage engineering requirements in your area? Come to think of it, do you have any signage ordinances?

Sorry,
most places will require special approvals to put up a sign, especially in a residential area. Is this sign going to be lit either internally or externally? Will it be visible to any neighbors? Is it going to be in an exposed location, subject to prevailing winds, or in a protected courtyard with buildings around it? A sign that big, up that high in high winds is like a vertical cantilevered beam. You have to make sure that the attachment of the sign to the post is adequate, that the post is strong enough to resist the bending moment, that the post to footing connection is adequate and that the footing is sized to resist overturning both by it's weight and by contact with enough of the surrounding soils. How was this previously mounted?

This the original sign from the 60's. Going to put it about 6' in front of my shop. Somewhat sheltered by the house.

There's a few things to consider..........!

I guess the days when we just went out in the wilderness and hacked out a farm any way we liked are kinda gone.

Are you way out in the boonies between big hills, sheltered by forest where no one will ever see it?

Do you want to do it by the book with permits and engineering etc. or just stick it up and see if no one complains and makes you take it down?

What is your jurisdiction, zoning etc.?
