Footing Question

Hello,

I have a general question about foundation footings. Does the footing need to have a flat bottom? Meaning, is it OK if the footing elevation changes a few inches as long as the top is level?

It does not have to be perfectly flat.

I'm guessing you mean length wise and not across the width..

What is real important is how wide. That determines the loading.

Make sure you follow code in your area for depth.

It needs to be poured so that the thinnest part meets the minimum specification.

The width is good, especially for a one story building, but the depth is where the strength comes in. Make sure to use double rebar, one above the other, since concrete is great under compression but doesn't like being in tension. I always use local code as a minimum since I'm building for myself. Check the freezing conditions in your area.

So your saying the depth or thickness of the footing is going to change by a thickness of 3-4" over the length? ( You did say the top would be level.) As old wizard says the thinnest part has to be above min thickness allowed.

I would say as long as the top is level and the bottom is at least the frost line it's going to be ok. If min is 42" deep and goes down to 44" or so it'd be ok
