This release valve is for a Sears 328-12001. I will admit to playing around with it, twisting it to see its function. I noticed that the spur gear would not turn by hand pressure and thought it was rusty. Gave it a shot of PB blaster. Played with it some more and it either it broke lose or I turned it enough to allow it to turn. I can see the concept, I think? The square "nut" is captured in the square washer. But how do you set the "depth"? Do you assemble and use trial and error? The spur is welded on.
Thanks for your energy and perserverance on this site:rocker:

You simply set the square piece to a depth that allows it to sit in the corresponding washer and that also allows the outer Nut to thread into the block. Once you get to this point its as simple as turning the Gear (to raise the square piece) as you thread the assembly into the block. If you don't follow these steps the square piece would simply bottom out before you get the assembly sealed in the block.
