I figured I'd start a thread instead of just posting in the coupon thread.

Seems very similar to the Lowe's coupon generators...

New Jersey couple plead guilty to scamming Kohl's Cash rewards program

A New Jersey couple pleaded guilty Wednesday to defrauding the Kohl's Cash rewards program of nearly $600,000 by creating a computer program to steal cash certificate numbers belonging to customers, according to court documents filed in federal court.

Pavan Gurram and Vanaja Gattupalli, who are originally from India, pleaded guilty to fraud in federal court before U.S. District Judge J.P. Stadtmueller on Wednesday. Their sentencing is set for January.

Gurram, as the mastermind of the fraud, is facing more prison time, about a decade in prison based on sentencing guidelines. But his plea agreement says if he cooperates fully, the prosecutor could recommend a sentence below the guidelines. That includes helping the government locate all the assets purchased with the stolen money including in overseas accounts, where some money was deposited.

Gurram also agreed to pay $587,526 in restitution. Gurram remains behind bars after a judge found he was flight risk.

Gattupalli is less culpable than her husband, according to documents, and prosecutors will recommend a sentence of less than a year, if she fully cooperates. She is free on bond.

Kohl's Cash is a loyalty program by the Menomonee Falls retail chain that gives customers $10 certificates when they spend $50 at the store or online. The Kohl's Cash program generates a large number of certificates. During the period of the suspected fraud, Kohl's issued about 4 million rewards cash certificates per month.

Gurram, a computer programmer, developed a program to steal legitimate Kohl's Cash certificate numbers and use them to buy merchandise, which the couple kept or sold, court records show. He also sold the stolen numbers to others, including businesses that resell gift cards.

The investigation was opened by the FBI after customers complained to Kohl's that they were not able to redeem cash rewards certificates they had received, records showed.

Gurram and Gattupalli used cash benefits from more than 7,000 customers between June 2014 and June 2015. He placed more than 1,000 orders with Kohl's buying items such as electronics, jewelry, sports memorabilia, clothing and household items. The items were used by the couple, sold to others who didn't know they were stolen, returned for store credit or sent overseas to relatives as gifts, records show.

FBI agents think the defendants seized the Kohl's Cash certificate numbers by using an automated computer process that "located, identified and provided certificate bar code and PIN numbers for rewards cash certificates in a sequential manner."

Kohl's loss prevention team tested the FBI's theory and was able to create an automated process to generate cash rewards numbers and then do a balance inquiry on the website. Using that process, the team was able to get both the certificate number and the current balance for about 3,000 Kohl's Cash certificates — in less than an hour.

Not that the people were right. But companies these days really need to build security into their system... if they can hack it within an hour it is not secure.

Have they caught whoever made those Lowe's coupon generators?

Actually, I should ask does the average GJ member want them caught, and for the Lowe's coupon generators to be shutdown?

This is for stealing Kohl's cash/gift cards, that other people (or the company) paid the value for, which is different than coupon codes. The concept is the same, the execution is a bit different.

I agree with above. So is it wrong to Google "---- coupon code" and go on coupon.com or retailmenot.com and use a coupon that is publicly accessible? Generating coupon codes is different than stealing gift card.

I think this would be more along the lines of when I used to see guys on 4chan that would figure out the scheme for barcodes on coupons from Walmart or Target and would make up "Buy one get one free PS4" or "Free Xbox One with purchase of Xbox One controller" coupons.

These people figured out how the gift card numbers were assigned and went from there.

I don't think anything could really happen from just Binging for "Home Depot Coupons" or something and using what you find. At most you'll have a jerk store manager yelling at you and you'll have to call the customer care line.

Bing bought me my Wrightgrips! :D

I cashed in like 175$ of Bing Rewards into Amazon cards to buy them. I only had to chip in a little bit.

Those are legal coupon sites, because the manufacturers and retailers usually have business relationships with them. I'm pretty sure coupons.com gets their coupon codes directly from the manufacturers. I've even seen the coupons.com link listed on some retail sites.

The illegal Lowe's coupon generators I was referring to are the ones that have no business relationship with Lowe's. Lowe's has previously threatened legal action against sites like Slickdeals that provide info on such generators, and most sites comply by removing that info. I think the offshore sites are the ones that Lowe's can't stop.

The coupon generators crack the formula used by Lowe's to create numbers for their coupons. In other words, they can generate a number that was already printed and issued by Lowe's for one of their legitimate coupons.

So here's the dilemma.

If a coupon legitimately issued by Lowe's gets rejected by the register as already redeemed, does that mean the customer was robbed of their coupon? I can't see such a customer being happy, that's for sure.

Here, try this: http://bfy.tw/2XgJ

:D

But seriously, please share your experiences with this program!

I've been using it for maybe a year and a half? I use Bing as my search engine and earn something like 20-30 points a day just for doing the normal searches / news browsing I do every day at work. You can cash in 475 points for 5$ in Amazon cash. It doesn't sound like a lot but you just sort of leave it in the background and then one day you look and go "Wow! I've got a lot of rewards points to spend on tools on Amazon!" You can also get a lot of points quickly if you refer other people or do some of their "Quests" each day.

I have received legitimate hard copy coupons from Lowes when I moved (one for my wife and one for myself) and one of them did not work in store - I am assuming because someone used the code based on the generators that are out there. I love a good deal and have been tempted to use these in the past, but after the embarrassment in Lowes that day trying to convince them that I was not trying to scam them, I do not support them at all. A coupon for a discount is not as bad, in some ways, as actual cash like the Kohls story above, but a thin line has been drawn here.

Remember when Microsoft was running all those Bing cashback rewards back when Bing was new?

I got loads of cash back, all the way up to 50% off a photo printer from HP and even 30%+ off on Ebay (which I used to purchase a ductless mini split heat pump + installation, and every fixture for a bathroom remodel)

Kohl's is a train wreck of a company. My GF took out a Kohl's card and charged like 120 worth of stuff back in mid 2014. We never got a bill in the mail for months and called them a couple times and they said she was "not in the system."

Then about a year later we got a notice from a debt collector saying we owed over $300 to Kohl's with interest and penalties. I spent an hour on the phone with Kohl's corporate who apologized, waived all interest and fees, and notified the credit bureaus of the error. Apparently the store where she opened the card screwed up. We then paid off the real balance when they sent the adjusted bill and closed the account. I will never shop there again.

Kohls is the most god awful store there is, and that includes sears & kmart. I never go in that place.

My wife has had good luck with Kohls. She always gets coupons etc. and plays their "games" (coupons, Kohls cash etc.) Never any issues with not getting statements or anything like that.
