See the pics below. Those were from a trip to Illinois with school. We got to see a couple of the factories and Caterpillar's demonstration facility. Even got to see a D11. D6 is like 185hp, 46,000lbs operating weight. D11 is 850hp, 230,000lbs.

My friend David works at Blanchard CAT in Columbia if you know him.

And here I thought it was, "you can see where a Detroit was parked from a mile away"...

Haha, ours didn't mark it's territory too much. It used some oil like they all do, though.

Gotta love an engine that requires at the minumum requires ear plugs and the last one I drove had me thinking about ear muffs as well.

Radio? We don't need no stinking radio. Ours wasn't straight piped, I couldn't imagine one that was.

BTW Who can tell me the reason that Cat changed it's color from the bright yellow used on equipment of days gone by, to the color we see on the new machines and attachment today? Take your guesses and I will tell you later what the reason was if no one guesses the right answer.

OK, since a bit of time has gone by and no one has guessed the correct reason for Cat changing the color of it's machines I will tell you. They changed because the old color emitted a very high Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) level that was having an ill effect on the reporting levels Cat had to report to the EPA. By changing their color from the bright yellow to the muted yellow we see today they found it easier to meet EPA compliance guidelines.

The above is what I learned from one of Cat's environmental guys in the early 1990's. Who was I to question, what really made no sense to me was the fact that John Deere and others such as Komatsu to this day still wear bright yellow colors. I suppose Komatsu can easily be explained due to being made across the pond, but that would not explain Deere. At any rate, there is a bit of trivia for ya.

Sweet!

My friend let me help him teardown and rebuild a Mercedes-Benz 16-litre Twin-Turbo V8 when he was building it up to go into a 5-axle special purpose Actros. That thing had enormous turbos to start with, i was amazed to see the ones that replaced them. Certainly the industry i want to go into, another friend is trying to get me a job/work visa to go work with him for WW Williams in Ohio.
