Force rusting - continue thru clear coat?

I've found really good results force rusting w muriatic acid and then H2O2 (hydrogen peroxide). A clear coat then really brings out the patterns and "grains."

Not sure if and how badly this might continue to rust after I clear coat it? Anyone have experience?

Application is indoors and humidity here is very, very low.

That's my inclination as well but I've read other experiences online stating it will continue to rust to some degree - I've just not been able to find a detailed discussion. In liquid form I don't think muriatic needs much of anything to eat away at whatever it can (I wouldn't pour it on my hand and then spray w clear coat trusting the lack of oxygen would keep it from continuing to eat my skin). I don't know about once it's evaporated/dried however. I guess I shoulda paid more attention in chem class.

The wife force rusted a table w H2O2 and gave it one coat of clear and reports it did continue to rust a little under the clear coat. However the one coat may have simply been imcomplete/poor coverage.

i would reccommend sand blast, prime and paint to avoid rust. wait... you want rust... nvm. lol!

It will continue to rust, iron oxide which it will become will have enough oxygen within it to continue the rust and damage the clear coat.

Easy question. Ever see a shoddy DIY "paint job"/bodywork where the rust was painted over? Ever noticed how it came right back?

Yes, it will continue to rust to some extent. If you look at clearcoat under a microscope it looks like a sponge. Those "holes" allow some air and moisture threw to the metal.

That is why clean metal needs to be primed before being painted.

Check out some VW sites like VWvortex, those guys do rusted hoods all the time. One BMW E30 owner painted rust or was it copper patina?
