A good cordless 3/8 impact.Used to use mine constantly at the dealership, especially for removing cowls from the then common Windstar to access the rear of the engine.

From Matco with your student discount I would get set set of 3/8 drive metric swivel impact sockets from 10-19mm plus 1/2 drive in 15 and 18mm.
I would also recommend 1/4 drive impact swivels in 7, 8, 10, and 13mm.
If you haven't bought a good 3/8 and 1/2 impact wrench plus a 1/4 air ratchet and a 3/8 air ratchet consider those as well. However, you can usually beat a tool truck's price on air tools by buying IR from tooltopia or the toolwarehouse.net:beer:
I would also consider a good DVOM.

Does anyone know if there is a special plier for removing the glowplug boots on the 6.0 Powerstroke? If so, I would recommend it. A couple weeks ago we had an F-250 with hardened rubber boots. About 100k on the truck. The boots broke up as we were trying various screwdrivers/pliers to remove them (but still left part of the boot in the head, which had to be removed).

Those wouldn't work. There is a flange on them. It seems designed to allow a flat head plier... sort of like a trim removal tool... to pull them. Also, the rear one or two on the passenger side are a couple inches from the evaporator housing. Not sure how my shop those got out at all as I wasn't present for that part.

edit: I just remembered how spark plug boot pullers look like... but still not sure if they would work here because of the clearance issues.

to go along with the post above, the lisle 65600 for the 3v's with broken spark plug tips. Don't think SO has a set for that yet...or at least I couldn't find one.

All right I can give you a lot of advises but i just want it simple... But why focus in Diesel area? my work(Andy Mohr Ford Mercury Lincoln) has big diesel area and it is full of shitload about 6.0 and 6.4L engines!! Even the diesel techs are friends to me and they caution me to stay away diesel or i will hate... i already hate 6.0 or 6.4 because stupid design of international engines!! too many head gaskets, coolant problems, and many things to go on... they get sick of it but they have to stay work because they still get paid as better than be unemployed...

I was the only diesel tech at my dealership back when the 6.0 first came out. When Ford decided to put it in the econline van I called it quits and moved to International.Best move I could have made.Same technology, easier chassis to work around.Saved my body untold troubles over the years.Nice to be able to flip the hood open and stand staring straight at your work.Laying over the top of a Super Duty and hooking your nuts on the hood latch all the time is no fun.

that happened to me once! OUCH! i had soft pads to put on top of hood latch if i work on it... Before i started to work at Ford Mercury Lincoln shop, my service director asked me what i can do. i told him i can do anything except not fix where it have noise problem unless you provide me a tech to assist me where is noise from... they did as asked other tech to listen and pinpoint me where it is. But i told him that i can do diesel and my service director said dont worry about it because he has 5 diesel techs to do so he want me to be GAS engine technician.. so that fine with me... i like to have challanges..

Worse thing i was told from long time diesel technician is he will either kick or shot me with injector protector cap if i work on diesel... but i did not open any diesel engine except replacement radiators, serperatine belt tensioners, belts, and oil changes same time with fuel filters... that long time diesel tech dont care because he is sick of do all same thing to replace radiator under warranty so he dont want do common problems because it is very boring..

i understand that... if you love to do work on those then do it!

I do like work on chrysler, jeep, and dodge because i knew a lot of shortcut and very simples to work on it but ford made challanges to me but i made it under of times...

you will need 12pt 12mm swivel socket OR either mac or snap on 12pt 12mm long socket that special design for it.. i has few of them even no other techs in my work have what i has... they kept asked me to borrow it...

i can tell you list what to need buy but i almost has too many tools to say and i am glad that i got it and work it easy for me while i do see some of tech tried to do hard or long way.... i hate to work too hard for simple time to do...

Known industry wide - FoMoco is a bear to work and warranty pay is lower than GM , but sales are getting better at FORD , at least you will have customers !

yea thats what im used to doing but they just dont pay near enough around here. At the local IH you would be better off flipping burgers than having to buy tools and deal with all the headaches.

You may want to purchase on of these... http://www.sjdiscounttools.com/sch64250.html for servicing rear brakes on 500's and Freestyles, etc. You can get away with using the LIS2500 but it takes a little bit longer. One of these to service rear axle seals/ bearings on f350s etc..http://www.sjdiscounttools.com/kd3195.html. Rear axle seal installer for limited access on explorers, expeditions, taurus's..http://www.sjdiscounttools.com/lis17850.html Also, a good Master ball joint set with 4WD adapters... http://www.sjdiscounttools.com/otc6530ford.html

Good luck:thumbup:

I used to work at a Chevy dealer,(13 years) I now work mostly on Ford ambulances, but also work on anything else that rolls through the door. GM seem a lot harder to work on to me.
