Yea donate 1/2 of them to goodwill...

so, i learned an ugly lesson about this recently.

goodwill, salvation army, etc around here dont have any tools for sale. they get donations, but there are a small number of people who apparently drive around and buy everything that is available. the people at the "stores" believe it is people buying them to sell at flea markets.

gw and sa mark the tools at low prices so that their customers can afford them, but they dont languish long before someone buys everything. when i talked to them, they told me that they didnt have people coming around looking for them, so they didnt consider it a big deal that someone scooped them all up.

now i dont know what to do with the box of tools i have left over from the stack that i bought. giving it to a charity so that they can sell the box for 10$ to someone who will fill their flea market table seems, i dont know, unsavory or something.

A52: just a thought. either post an ad to sell them on craigslist for $10 or $20 or whatever and donate the money like some guys do to THEIR FAVORITE CHARITY.

also i haven't seen too many WEALTHY FLEA MARKET guys sitting all day to make $30-$100 so why not drop them off where they will get used by a buyer or resold to a buyer.

in some cases some of us didn't pay much or anything for the tools we are donating and getting them back in the system instead of scrapped is a very good thing.

ALL: sorry back to the ratchet storage. i put mine in drawers in an unheated shop, but i service them if they need it.

I place all my ratchets drive down and leaning on an edge. I also organize them from 1/2" to 3/8" to 1/4" drive. Same goes for my torque wrenches, breaker bars and extensions.

My current setup:

Cant believe nobodys pointed out the tube of super lube for when his snap on bill comes, holycrap!

A52: if you're going to give them away, maybe find a young guy who needs some tools to get started and give them to him, maybe have him cover shipping or pay a nominal amount so he appreciates them more.

but what about the ratchets? do you just leave them to roll around?

I lay them in a drawer and they don't "roll around." In my toolbox you'd have to slam the drawer pretty hard to get the ratchets to move around.

I have a HF 44" inch box with the foam liners it came with.

geez Lois now I know where those auto shop rates go.
why do you need 3 of the same exact ratchets? with snap-on one needs extra backups.

I used to lay them in the top drawer of my toolbox, but they took up too much space. I bought one of those $5 harbor freight magnet strips, and attached it to my hutch. Easy to grab a ratchet when I need it, and they are out of the way.

I have a few on the magnet on my cart lid like that, the most used ones. The rest live in the top drawer with sockets and extensions.
Front to back, on their back, or side if flex, 1/4 on left, 1/2 on right, dividing the metric on left and standard on right...seems a common theme lol

Those magnets are pretty sweet. Although, all the magnets pulled out of one when I went to remove it from my box one day. Pretty lame

Small ones in drawers, large ones in the top compartment, a very large one hanging on the wall, ones at remote locations in small tool boxes.

I segregate my sockets and related tools by drive size.

oh man. all the scratches and "tool box marks" these things are going to get over the years will drive a tool polisher crazy.:lol::lol:

i like the idea. i have 2 drawers of ratchets, they take up too much space. ive reccently pulled out about 30 ratchets to sell and the drawers are still full.

Magnets. Got this magnetic plate on clearance at lowes a year or so ago. Wish they still had these!

I'm lusting after a snap on FHLF80a to add to it
