Hi, bought an off-road hitch pin today that has visible forging line, maybe 1/32" thick (1/8" wide).

How do most hitch pins end up perfectly (nominally) round and smooth? Are they machined after forging?

any hitch pins I've seen appear to be 5/8" round bar with a bend on the end and a hole drilled in the other end for the clip

For highway use, yes. Tractor pins are straight round stock, usually with some form of handle on the other end.

Same as truck hitch pins. Round stock machined, drilled, and the handle/stop welded on. At least that's how all of the one I've seen appear.
