Basicly a tap block. Usualy a "first project" for new Machnist to make and add to the tool box. Actualy a very handy tool.

I got both of mine at a garage sale...$5 each! They also make a great paperweight, everyone asks about it when they see it on your desk.

Well, I did get the one that was available locally. $20. I believe it is a bit older as the new ones appear to be unfinished other than the top and bottom ground surfaces. Here it is:

Most any shop needs a bench block. They are used in ways to help you do your work on various parts, but the main one I use one for is to hold parts to drive roll pins out or into. It also works well to hold a small shaft for stippling or for centerpunching, so you have steady support. I keep a couple of center punches parked in mine at work, to keep up with them and keep them ready to use.
