Former NASCAR mechanic built garage

After a recent divorce, I was living in a 1 bedroom apartment in San Antonio with all my tools, cars and car parts in storage warehouses when my brother sent a listing of a house for sale near Talladega with a note saying here was my dream house.

1200 sq ft house, 4000 sq ft workshop and a 4 car garage on 3 acres for less than I could build a metal building in Texas, And it was built by a NASCAR Hall of Fame mechanic! I had to admit I was intrigued, but dang, it was in Alabama.

I flew out for the weekend to give it a look, and much to my surprise, I bought it. It took 3 26 ft Penske trucks and a dedicated car hauler to get all my cars and junk here.

This is what it looked like before I moved in.

Oh, I have LOTs of stuff to fill it. Didn't I mention it took 3 26 foot trucks to get here.:p

I used the workshop to store everything while I've had some interior modifications made to the house, then came the Holidays and one of my daughters spent her Christmas break with me, so I didn't do anything to the workshop. I'm almost finished unpacking and arranging and will post updates soon.

That's awesome and from my old neck of the woods (pre army). Still have a lot of family and friends in the area.

I like everything about it. I'd be interested to see a little more of the house even since it is so integrated into the garage. Just cool overall design. Nice find!

Here are a before and after look at the 4 car garage that is under the house.

I just did mechanical work for most of my career and had other people do the body work on my personal projects. One day I got tired of paying for some bad bodywork and thought it can't be that hard. So I used Texas's Hazlewood Act (allows honorable veterans whose VA educational benefits have expired to go to state schools for free) and took a bunch of auto body and paint classes at night at a local vo-tech college. Now I do it all.

Since it's a cool rainy day, I'm not real motivated so here are some work in progress pictures to show how easy it is to fill up this big shop.

The last photo is a food tray cart I bought in a local auction for $40. Stainless steel with insulated double walls and doors. I plan on making it into a powder coat oven. Just need to add some heating elements from a couple of 230 volt space heaters I found on craigslist and do something about the rubber top that is glued on.

I'm amazed at all of the quick replies. One of the things I want to get before I fill up all this space is an old SUN engine analyzer like a model 740 or 1120 and a Sun distributor machine. Anyone have one they want to sell? Thanks

****, his name was Harry Mewborne. Once when he and Bobby Alison were racing back in the late 50's, Bobby had engine trouble and Harry the owner of another winning race car, told Bobby, he would help him by selling him some used parts.

When the weekend was over, Bobby went back to Miami and told his hero Red Farmer what a great place Alabama was. Red decided to come back to Alabama with Bobby and Donnie. They all made residence in Alabama and soon traveled the Southeast winning races, a lot of races and Bobby, Donnie and Red thus became known as “THE ALABAMA GANG”.

I don't use this word hardly at all to describe something, but your place deserves it. That place is "AWESOME"!!

Yeah that house, garage, and shop combo is a car lovers dream. Could keep 2 finished cars and 2 dd's downstairs and then have the whole shop for "dirty work". If you have more cars it looks like the shop is big enough to create a clean space to store cars and a separate area to work on them

Alright I gotta ask.

Can you share NASCAR stories with us please. There are a lot of nascar fans on here and I'm sure a lot of stories would be interesting to car guys that aren't nascar fans as well.
