It's double-sided although one side has tar on it and barely make out Texaco...

i'm going to make an outside border for it to strengthen it a bit it is heavy but very wavy.

Second pic shows small brackets i made. Then bolting it to the edge of the sign.

Great score !!

How the heck did you get that out in Montana ??

Even with the bullet holes, that sign is worth some serious coin.

continuing on with the border, up on sawhorses, Used 2" X 1/8" flat iron. then welded the flat iron even with the top edge of bracket. using the two small clamps to hold it as i progressed around the sign.

Very nice indeed. And a great price you paid for it. For $350, you got a killer deal. I've seen others in that shape go for $1500 around here.

My dad had a Texaco station 'back in the day'.

Nice Sign!
I paid for 3 years of college working in a Texaco Station in Kansas City back in the 1970's. Pumping gas, changing tires, driving the tow truck...and other duties as assigned by the owner (cleaning the toilets, painting the island curbs, washing the bay windows, etc...

Maybe the tar protected the sign and when it comes off you will have a great looking sign.

I need to follow along and get inspired to finish my Standard sign project

I am hoping that is the case. but it's -9 degrees outside, wind blowing about 30 m.p.h. not the time of year to remove tar from a sign, ha ha

I used to pump gas at a Texaco station in Waukesha, WI. Thanks for bringing back some fond memories of my time as a pump jockey/light duty mechanic. We still had REAL premium gas in those days, and gasoline wars between stations. Premium was 23.5 cents per gallon. We washed the windows for drivers, checked oil, water and windshield washer fluids. Water and WW got topped off for free. Oil was 35 cents a quart for Quaker State and Pennzoil. Havaline was a bit more expensive. Tires were around $35 a piece. Summertime promos would have us giving away a six pack of Coke for a fill up. But I digress. Beautiful sign.! Cheers, Jim Don

Any updates for us?

Well we are having some bad winds and melting snow here so spring might be around the corner as it reached 54 degrees yesterday. so I will be able to clean the bad side outside my shop soon. As i don't like to smell diesel in my shop I will update this as soon as i clean it up..

So with the temps being in the 90's here for days... i decided to give the tar removal a shot today. So after laying down some plastic and getting a rag and some diesel i got to work...

So after about 3 hours in the heat and plenty of scraping and scrubbing... here it is.

Guy I bought it from said it was on a roof laying there for years and the roof had been coated in tar , so the up side was clean and the down side was "well preserved":rocker:

Have you tried a product called Tub of Towels, I think o'relleys and Auto Zone carry it. This stuff is the BEST hand cleaner, and its great on grease'e tools or motor parts. It also works great on unwanted paint, just check a place that don't matter before you start going crazy on it. I have a can of this stuff all my cars and in the barn etc. Would probably help out on the sign.

Jim, I can relate. back in 66 or 67, I worked at Johnny's DX not to far from you in Muskego WI. Pretty much the same chores, prices, etc., and I concur, Nice job on bringing back the sign. Cheers, Mike

I think you may have been drunk when you posted this...

I suspect but it's hard to confirm.

I take medication before bed to help me sleep; has a similar result on my mental acuity.

Possible that it could have been a combination of both as well.

Love the sign, nice work.
