Was at our local dump today throwing away a couple of rusted Mustang doors. Right on top of the bin was this old vice.

Needs a repair and a section is cracked at the end, but I think all I need is a collar for the shaft.

Right now the shaft will unscrew all the way and it won’t pull open the jaws. But it opens and closes smoothly.

Gonna clean it up a bit and see how it comes out.

Nice find. Looks like a good user candidate with a little clean up. Prentiss is my personal favorite vise brand. Good save!

Bought a collar for the shaft and got it setup and working last night.

Anyone know of a way to convert a fixed base vice to a rotating base? Would like to have some more flexibility with it. I looked online and coming up with zilch.

DAN: how bad is the crack on top of the slide? the chunk missing on the side of the slide should only be mostly cosmetic as far as use.

best way to make that 100 ish year old vise accessible on all sides is to mount it on a stand and then you'd have 360 degree access.

if you look at the vise repair 101 thread another member just made a swivel base for an old 100+ year old Fulton vise, but it took a lot of steel and machining work on his lathe. do you have that skill?

nice save and if you can't fix the crack on the back of the slide maybe drill a hole at the end of the crack to keep it from cracking more while you maybe find another replacement dynamic jaw from maybe a vise that had a good one and other parts busted.
