Hello, I came across an old plane , Which I know nothing about ! I disassembled it to photograph and get some identification numbers, but there’s no name that I could find. Any help identifying it and possibly an age. Think I’ll just clean it up & refinish the wooden handles and set it on the shelf ? Any help appreciated , Thank you !

Well I looked up a Pexto #4 plane. If this is what I have ? It sure looks like it was not a very good quality plane? Maybe I should save the time of restoring it and just put it in a box of misfit tools for my kids to deal with when I’m gone ?? Anymore info on my plane will still be appreciated.

Those are considered to be some of the worst planes ever made.

You should verify my guess of brand before you crucify it.

Still hoping that someone out there can identify this from the photos or give me information on how to POSITIVELY identify it ? The photos I posted show a #5 & Made in USA. And a #8 stamped near where the blade goes through the base. ( sorry I don’t know the terminology of planes ) I’m not holding much hope for it being a desirable tool ?? Again Thanks to everyone for your help and input !!

It's an old plane in fairly crummy shape. Even if it was a Stanley, it wouldn't be worth lots of money. What do you want to do with it? You can try and clean it up (Fettling in plane speak) and see how well it does. I've worked on a couple in my younger days, and they mostly sit in my tool cabinet. It could be a good way to kill a few afternoons bringing it back if you have time to kill. The lever cap seems to be the cheapest part of it, being some type of stamped metal instead of a casting like you would see in a stanley.

I really have no intention of ever using the plane.? Just thought it would be cool cleaned up and on display in my workshop ? Like you said maybe if I’m looking for a project to kill some free time on ?? Thanks for the link on lever-cap hand planes, as I said , I know absolutely nothing about hand planes. Thank you.

I’m an eternal optimist and I’ve never been able to get one to work much better than a paint scraper. The sheet metal frog is the real culprit. Pexto chisels were great, but these were a swing and a miss.

They may have been sold under multiple names, but the sheet metal frog is the giveaway.

Here is my Dunlap to compare it to. It has been insulted on this thread as well.IMG_1080.jpegIMG_1155.jpegIMG_1157.jpeg

Thank you, I’m not worried about my plane being insulted, Lol.. I’m not even sure how I obtained it ? Maybe in a box from a sale, or in a box of tools from a friend ? Either way I don’t have any real amount of money into it ! I just thought it may be worth restoring ? Sounds like only if I’m looking for a project, and not for value, ? If I should decide to restore it I’m sure it’ll look neat on a shelf ? As I said in an earlier comment I have no intention of ever using it anyways ! Not all antiques have a monetary value, some just need to viewed for their enjoyment. !!

There are also far more interesting planes to sit on a shelf and enjoy.

Okay, Thanks to all who responded to my post whether positively or negatively. I’ll take all comments into consideration. But Hand planes are nothing I have a real interest in, so this one most likely will be the only one I’ll ever own. Unless I find one in a treasure box at an Estate sale or farm auction !! Again Thanks for all the information I received it’s all very much appreciated. Jeff Gilmore.

I have a slightly different opinion. Yes, it is junk. That I agree with. However, it may be worth cleaning up just to have around to compare so you can show others how much better others made. Also, because most of these are getting scrapped, they are becoming more rare. Compare it to a Vega. It's junk too, but in good condition they can sell for more than when they were new.

Thank you, you make a good comparison with the Vega !!! Lol..Hell probably mention Vega to my kids and they wouldn’t know what I was talking about ?? Yes restore it put it on a shelf as a conversation piece for my enjoyment. And when my Grandchildren are old enough to retire it will be so rare it’ll be worth something !! Thank you for lifting my spirits.
