Found an older band saw I am considering...

Hello,
I stumbled across an older Atlas Press Co. band saw on craigslist and was wondering if it was worth it; have any of you worked with/owned one of these? I have been looking for a band saw off and on for the shop, but nothing serious. This one appears to be in good condition, is within a 15 min drive, and is only $40. Seems like a decent deal. Here are the only 2 pics.

I did find this restore from a quick google search (http://vintagemachinery.org/photoindex/detail.aspx?id=2064).
What do you guys think?

If you are going to use it for wood only, it's a great deal, I'd buy it. But if you're thinking of changing the blade for metal use it won't work, blade speed is to fast.

I'm not familiar for that particulate Atlas saw, but Atlas made mostly metal cutting tools, so I'd be a bit surprised if it were a wood only saw, but it is something to check on.

Even if is, I'm guessing it is an indirect belt drive and its really easy to add a jack shaft set of pulleys to that type of saw to slow it down for metal.

Having said that, I'd buy it for $40 in a heartbeat unless it was worn out/damaged beyond repair. Heck even if it is, it's worth several times that in parts alone.

The Atlas is the best 12" band saw ever built. As mentioned, it is a wood/plastic only BS. I sold a nice one on a custom stand for $250.

Wonder what year it was made.If it's as old as I think it may be you can ask some questions and also look up some information on these two sites.

Atlas is a good machine. I think atlas was before delta,not sure on that history. I would buy it and maybe change pulleys to slow it down if it's a high rpm.

What the heck? I drive over to the guys house and he is not there, but his wife is. She tells me that the drill press has already been sold and they "tried to notify me" before I headed out there......sigh......
Oh well, it wasn't meant to be. Like I said, I am just keeping an eye out. Hopefully something else pops up.

theres the quick and the dead,you don't seem to quick.craigslist is a fast mans game,remember,if you are looking at it,so are 6 other guys that have the money and live 4 minutes closer.that was a great saw for 40 bucks
