Found an unknown year craftsman drill press

Well, as the title states, I picked this up the other day. Everything works and it is very good overall shape by my standards. Excuse the mess in the background-the maid has been slacking. I've tried looking up the model number to find out the year made but all I get are results for DPs like my other drill pres (the blue one).

I mostly got it just fot the table lift but I'm really beginning to like it. It may just stick around.

Any body have any info on what year it is? Does anybody else have one of these? I've never seen another one.

Both of your DP's date from the early 40's. Both have 4 handles on the spindle armature, which puts them after 1938 (IIRC). The rectangular plate behind the ON/OFF switch places it at 1941 or later. Until 1940 the switch plate was oval.

The motor is older than the 1st DP. Companion was the bargain label for Sears from the mid-30's until 1941. It was replaced by the Dunlap label in 1940, with some overlap in the labels.

Nice find on the table lift and you got a v. cool CM DP.

Have you looked at the pictures at OWWM.com?

They have a lot of different CM DP models, and they maybe able to help further pinpoint the date.

Jakemac: thanks for the info. I had noticed the different shapes of various on/off switch plates but didn't know why they were different.

Torqueman: I've been looking at owwm and haven't seen this exact one yet.

The one with the mohawk is essentially the same machine as the blue one you posted. The belt cover was sold with the DP and I believe it was also sold as an accessory option. (but I haven't had the time to look into that)

Both were made by Atlas for Sears. That is why you're getting similar results to your blue DP when you search for the model number. I'm not sure (I haven't been able to pin it down), but I think that these are both Atlas model 74's with slight variations for Sears. Sears would assign a different model number with each variation of theirs, even though the DP's are essentially the same machine.

BTW - The closest match to the old Craftsman blue that I've found is Valspar #85205 Classic Royal Blue. It's a little brighter than the faded color on the old machines, but it blends in well.

That is a really cool looking drill press! If one was like that around here, I'd definitely spring on it. Even though I have two "newer" ones already!

The cool factor that hits me is that "Golden Jubilee" sticker on the motor. Never have I seen that before.

I really like this belt guard even if it is an added accessory. It looks a lot better than the belt covers for the 100/150 DPs. The jubilee sticker stood out to me as well. The 1936 number on that sticker made me think it was a 1936 DP at first.

What a great score! I'm afraid I have nothing to contribute regarding dating your drill press but it does seem like Jakemac covered a lot.

Isn't that a Lo-Speed pulley on the blue DP? Do you not use it?
