If your nut and bolt guy doesn't know what a Skidmore gauge is, you are buying from a un-educated sales rep. Next time your guy is in, ask him "out of the blue" what a Skidmore is !

Skidmore gauges are very exspensive....its a gauge that shows the torque perimaters are on a nut bolt & washer is.....my job offers a skidmore test to show differences in fasteners

A skidmore gauge test is only good when you are comparing apples to oranges....a test showing a standard grade 8 to another grade 8 is worthless....grade 8 to grade 5 is fine but doing a standard grade 8 to a maintenance grade 8 is even better

I would recommend it....its a teaching tool for you and him

You would be surprised how often people over torque nuts and bolts

It is also a good tool to show what happens when someone is not using "matched" fasteners !

Yes from the Bolt to the nut to the washer....to get the best out of the group they should all be the same....you dont want certain pieces that might be 150,000 tensil strength and one part 120,000 tensil strength....you have alot better chance of breakage

Hey dink, I know you are in the business, but that is not true. The washer only needs to be as hard or a little harder than the item being assembled and the nut can softer than the screw or bolt with no detriment to the durability of the joint. This was proven in extensive testing at my previous employer. I call FUD.

We lived through the counterfeit bolt fiasco in the 80s and decided to trust no one unless we could verify it with testing. Our entire company depended on it.
