Found this vise on the shelf at my Dad's. He passed away in 2011, so I can't ask him....what is it? Looks like it used to be a green-silver color and someone painted it orange. Jaws are 5" wide, opens to about 6 1/2", weighs 48 pounds. There is no stop or anything, if you keep screwing after 6 1/2" it just comes apart. There is a flat spot on one side, like a tag or something was there, other than that, I've only found the markings you can see in the pics.

Wilton is pretty premium! It's far from cheap and high quality. The other one is also pretty solid looking. Can't decide who made it but might be a Stanley

On the unmarked vise, remove the swivel base and look for markings. Might be something there that will give a clue to its maker.

Yup, the unmarked one is a wilton and the casting number is a dead giveaway. It's good quality for budget minded people but still an excellent vise. The Bullet vises were the top of the line.

Does the rear nut sit flush with the stationary jaw housing? I think I remember that particular vise having a large rear nut and the dynamic jaw slide didn't protrude when closed.

The first vise is a Wilton 745. These were both made in the USA and also imported. Either one is a fine vise imo. It takes standard Wilton Tradesman 5" jaw inserts which are both cheap and plentiful if you want to replace them.

Edit: In fact I have a decent used pair of jaw inserts that will fit. If you want them just cover shipping and they're yours.

I think you guys are right.....below is a pic I found on google after searching based on you guy's answers.....looks about right, even the color.

bigcaddy - what you are describing for the the rear nut is correct if I understand what you're saying. Nothing sticks out the back. I knew I should have taken a picture of the back because it looks a little different than my other vises.

Thanks guys!!!

Something funny is going on here with the rear jaw. Looks like it was modded. I don't see any bolt holes. I can't really tell what the deal is from the photos.

Are you talking about bolt holes for the jaw insert? If so, they are there but they are full of **** and rust. I had to look closely for one of them when it was sitting in front of me.

Now I have to see if I can get the orange paint off. Maybe some brake-cleaner or goof-off.

Looking at that same photo, the 745 model number is right there. I didn't see it in the original post.

That explains it. Should be very simple to swap them out if you choose to.

OP, any guess as to how long your dad owned the vise? Just wondering if it's USA or not. Fine piece of iron regardless, hope you get it repainted and make dad proud.

As far as I know, my Dad obtained these vises from the estate auction of his Mother/Father. His Father passed away in 1976 I believe. So they are older than that. I don't know when the cutoff was for USA vs. import. The one that's labeled as a Wilton says USA on it. The other one has no apparent markings, that I've found, as far as it's origin.

Where did they live all that time ??

Back in the day, most items purchased locally . . . . and kept local.
