Returned to work today after a long holiday break, and found a 36" Gorilla Bar. Can't figure how it got there, but it's been adopted into a nice garage.

I was walking the north side of our site, along a canal... and there it sat. Only had to clean a bit of rust of the non-painted tips.

Nice find. Free tools are always good.

My best find was an old lady who i moved. Her husband passed away, so she asked me if i wanted anything out of the garage. It was a full single garage full of old tools, jars of screws, woodworking tools and lots of cool junk. I helped myself to a buch of stuff. I could have gone through that garage for hours looking for stuff, but i was short on time and i didn't want to get too greedy.

Besides finding plyers, channel locks, and a few ratchet straps laying along the road sides the best thing I ever found was above the ceiling of the building I work. I found a pair of aluminum pipe wrenches with steel jaws. I assume they were left up there 15+ years ago during construction. I think they are 12 inch and 8 inch. I have a friend who is a union plumber and he said those things are great because of the light weight. Now a buddy of mine found a Milwalkee (sp?) saw zaw in the case with extra blades along a country road. The metal case had a little road rash but the saw was in excellent condition.

Junkyards and the sides of roads are great places for lost tools. Especially if there is a new area with a lot of houses going in and lots of traffic. The local u-wrench-it is a great place for forgotten tools. Usually around the "we plucked the engine" areas . . . I don't know if people are just tired at that time and happy they got the beast out or what. Their loss = your gain.

Uhmmm.... Did ya find her first then move her, or did you have to move her to find her??

JK, Krashman.

I once found a gorgeous 3/8" Snap-on ratchet in the frame of a truck - couldn't have been more then a few weeks old - the thing was in perfect shape! I have found a few sockets and other tools while working on trucks, tug boats and ships - lots of holes and tool-gobbling nooks and crannies. I would always find something under a boat/ship engine. Of course, I have lost my share of tools under those, too - probably more than I know about.

Most recently I found 4 Mac wrenches at an intersection near my house. This was maybe 2 or 3 months ago. I am pretty sure I know who they belong to based on the time of day and this guy's schedule and I almost considered returning them but if he can't keep track of them then I guess he can afford to buy replacements. What do you think? Would you return them? I am still undecided. He has prolly replaced them by now...or blamed one of his co-workers for stealing them!

I almost hate finding good stuff - then I am compelled to purchase more of the same to complete a new set using the found tools as a starting point.

:dunno:

A coworker came to work one day carrying a full set of air tools, in a case. Says he watched it fall of the truck in front of him. I think he knows who they belong to, but he kept them anyhow, think he sold them. The guy doesn't even own a compressor.

Found a double flare kit laying in the intersection one day, brand new in the package. Just as I swung around to pick it up, another car pulled up but I beat him to it! He was pissed. Just looked at and said "Pretty fast for an old guy, huh?"

If it was me, I would talk to the guy and see if he's missing anything. If I ever lost a tool and someone found it (and knew that it was mine), I'd hope they would return that tool. Then again, if your guy isn't missing anything, then you'd simply have to keep them.

My tools finds include a Cornwell 3/8 ratchet, Craftsman finish sander, True Value tol box full of hardware, 200+ pounds of screws and nails, 1" irwin auger bit, Craftsman #4 plane.

If I found some tools and knew who they belonged to I would try to return them. I would hope someone would try to return mine if they found them.

I found a 14mm Blue Point combination wrench under the hood of a car I was working on.

One of our other techs found a 15mm Snap-On socket between the engine and transaxle of a brand new Taurus a few years ago. The cust. was complaining of a ticking noise when the engine was running. We verifed the noise and removed the transaxle, expecting to find a broken/loose flywheel or bolt. Just a forgotten socket.

When I was still wrenching, I was paranoid about leaving my tools in a car. I wouldn't pull a car out until ALL of my tools were accounted for.
