I have a 4ft foundation wall on 3 sides of my garage. The garage is 35 x 20. I would like to smooth out the wall with something so I can paint to match the walls above. I mixed up a batch of foundation plaster and did a 3x3 square test. Stuck to concrete well but it's like having 40 grit sandpaper on the wall. Is there another product that I could use that would leave a smooth finish ready for paint? And something easier to work with. Another thought was to glue cement board to the foundation. But that stuff is expensive.. Any ideas?

Coarse sand in the mix is what makes it rough. Finer sand will make it smooth. Also try getting a pre tinted mix. Painting masonry is not long lasting but, the paint will make it even smoother. Essentially you are applying stucco to the walls. Although, I like to call the smooth finish a plaster finish. But technically it is stucco. Any stucco job requires 2 to 3 layers to achieve the final desired finish especially when trying to make smooth.

My garage has poured walls, I parged the walls, then coated w/ Sherwin Williams LOXON.
Then final color coat, isn't 100 smooth, but close.
(looks like one of my drywall jobs):bounce:

Thanks kELLHAMMER, 12OZD, I do want a smooth finish so stucco sounds like the way to go. I have worked a lot over the years with drywall mud but never stucco. Went to HD and the only stucco I could find was in what looked like pre-mixed boxes at $13.00 a box. Can you buy stucco in a 80LB bag like cement and just add water? And if so where? I have about 260 sq ft and don't want to break the bank. I bought a 7 inch diamond wheel for my grinder and knocked down all the rough spots, but I figure on average The stucco will be 3/8-1/2 in thick. Thanks again for any advice.

I used portland cement mixed w/ fine (playground) sand. (Lowes)
Troweled it on as smooth as possible, then a coat of LOXON, then a coat of SW paint.

(looking for a pic)

Take a quick look at the Conproco website.....foundation coat or structrural skin is what I would recomend, available at masonary supply yards. Ready to mix.
