Fourplex outlets vs Duplex outlets

I bring this up because it seems like more an more electrical equipment has a power cord with some form of large terminal end hogging the use of a corresponding outlet. I would prefer to go with fourplex outlets but now I'm not so sure.

Would it be better to go with duplex outlets and space them slightly wider or are there outlets designed to accommodate multiple large cord ends?

Your help is much appreciated.

I used duplex outlets in the dirty/work area of the shop where the cars are parked. Mostly that involves battery chargers, floor fans and the occasional extension cord. I put them about every 6'. In the tool area with the bench and machines, all are quads. The feed for circuit X comes to a quad with a GFCI and a regular plug, then from there I run MC cable to several more quad boxes surface mounted. The idea is that if I move things, it's easy to "re-plumb" the power outlets or add on. It works - Drill press and grinder stand eat 3 plugs just in that one spot. That's a 12x24 room with three general purpose 12-2 runs feeding 42 plugs.

Fourplex or 4-in-1 receptacles are generally expensive. This Leviton one, which is a isolated ground surge supressor type is $20 at Fruitridge Tools.

I would just install two receptacles in a deep 4x4 box and call it a day. I have never run into anything that spans wide enough to block an adjoining receptacle, though sometimes it does block the other half of its own receptacle.

I put a duplex outlet on every other stud so every 32". Then wired them on 2 separate circuits alternating boxes so that any 2 outlets next to each other are on a different circuit. There's always 2 or 3 outlets within easy reach. All my outlets are 48.5" off the ground so I can still get to them with a sheet of steel or plywood leaned against the wall.

Thanks guys. Much appreciated.

That Leviton receptacle is interesting. I like how they flipped the ground terminal top to bottom. Need to check their site out.

Thanks again.

On fruitridgetools.com search for "leviton 4-in-1" or just "4-in-1" (no quotes).

Great to deal with, shipping sometimes is pricey, but they have decent prices and fast shipping and some really unusual stuff. The have limited quantities of stuff as it is liquidation from other businesses.

That Leviton unit will screw to a 4x4 box or a regular single box in place of a receptacle. They make a wall plate to go behind it, but it is not needed at all. The connections are right in the middle so it will fit on a small box.
