Most lower-priced fowler stuff is China. Really it's not better than any of the other china rebranded tools.

Probably accurate though.

Fowler is a decent brand than will give you many years of service. One question though, if you buy the bore gage, you do know that you should have the calibrated ring gage to set it to, don't you? If you are checking for instance, say, a 7" hole, you need a calibrated ring gage to set it to so that you know you are correct. Other than that, you may as well just buy a set of inside mics in the same diameter range.

Fowler is just a brand name (like "Craftsman"), and likewise has no manufacturing capabilities. They contract with ??? for the manufacture of tools. In years past, the ??? used to be good. The ??? lately has been chinese and not very good.

Or cheaper yet, a set of snap gages, if the bore isn't too narrow and deep to use them.

When I first started out in Tool & Die back in '81, Fowler at that time was the brand to avoid. Over the years they have gained a fairly strong name in machinist tools. I don't think they will ever reach Starrett, or Mitutoyo, or B&S, but they are at least in the same ring with them now.

:+1: Every Fowler I've tried operated as rough as a generic chinese.

i know about the calibrated ring, and ill have to get a few of them.

I'm checking inside diameter of clearance rings that are seated in pumps. Typically much room around them as they sit about 6 inches into the pump body.

Clearance ring diameters on the pumps I work on are going to run anywhere from 5" - 8.5". Some are removable to check, which I can do with a caliper. Others are pressed in. If I remove them, I risk damaging them and getting inaccurate readings because it doesn't have anything on the outside of it to hold it at its original diameter.

Most of their junk comes out of china. They re-badge stuff from the low bidder. Look else where for something better.......
