framing exposed to weather

Excavating contractor is starting my footers two week later than planed due to the weather. If I start framing the walls now I won't have time get everything closed in before I leave for vacation. I will be gone for two weeks, will there be a potential problem if I leave the stud walls and trusses exposed for two weeks? I'd really like to get started asap but don't want to cause myself problems down the road

I would prob add some bracing to the corners of walls and tie the trusses together too...I wouldn't go overboard though. Should be fine.

If you're concerning with mold when wet, there's a good chance that it will grow. However, it happens all the time and just let the wood dry before closing up and you got plenty of time when you completely close it up on the interior.

Been watching a family build a very beautiful 2 story house on my street... since 2010. They put the roof up this summer. Not fully protected yet.

You can actually see the stages of their construction by the year it was done. The bottom sheathing is almost black with age and probably mold. They just put house wrap on it this summer along with 80% of the windows and roof shingles.

They have a full basement with a foam core foundation. It sat for 2010 winter... That foam has to be totally contaminated.

Can someone say no worries to this technique of building?

It can be done, my neighbor just did one in pieces and let it sit over winter, it dried out and is fine and he sheeted and enclosed this summer. To me its all one job if I can help it, I will wait or hurry a day or 2 to get something enclosed and covered. Its usually easier than starting over, waiting for it to dry some etc.

As others have said, make sure the framing is dry before you cover it. It may not grow mold, but it will move when it dries and you will have more nail pops in the dry wall than you will believe.

2 weeks should be no problem. Delays like that happen all the time during construction. Our house framing didn't get started until mid-September in 2010. We actually had rain and then ice sitting on our floors (and framing). Once we had the roof on (which didn't happen until December 2010), I got a 100,000 btu kerosene salamander going in the basement to melt the ice. Then I squeegeed the water out the front door. Everything was fine.

Being from the Pacific NW, I've never seen a house built that didn't get wet.

No worries.

Borrow a moisture meter if you can before you close up the inside.

The wood you're using has most likely sat outside for a few weeks behind the renovation center before you went and picked it up. Like others have said, just make sure it's dry when you close up.

That's true, but those bundles of 2x4's are wrapped before shipment from the point of production to protect them on the way to the destination. The plastic wrap is removed just before the bundle is placed in store. The wrap is for weather and scuff protection.

Do you really think all lumber was plastic wrapped in the 20's-80's. I don't recall seeing it until the last 10 or so years.

It is common practice to have framing sitting exposed for months at a time during construction.

As long it's dry when you close it up, I wouldn't worry about it.

Close in the outside. Then rather that drying out it will dry in.

I know nothing about wood construction! But, I due have to cross a set of UP RR tracks 4 plus times a day. I bet 20 - 40% of the bundles of wood on the trains have the plastic wrap flapping in the wind. I never gave it any thought till right now!
