If the wall is less than 10' in height, an you are 100% positive it's non load bearing (not carrying any load), 24" on center will be fine.

16"....the most important # in construction.....

It's not really about load bearing....it's more about a straight wall. Go 24" and you will regret it....especiall if you ever want to hang something heavy on the wall.

24 doesn't seem to cut it anymore...

When I built my barn, I used a lot of recycled studs that I had saved up for years. I didn't save but a few hundred dollars tops. It wasn't worth it in the long run.

I did 24" OC as I have a post/beam structure (i.e. the framed walls are not structural) and in my case I couldn't build the wall on the floor and simply stand it up (crooked barn required hand measuring/cutting/toe nailing each stud.. so, time saver to go 24"). It's totally fine, no issues at all. I do have OSB as the covering and I did horizontal blocking, so that adds some rigidity. But, if I wasn't faced with the constraints I had, I'd do 16" though (because of the benefits listed above, and because it's so cheap to do, why not?).

But 24 and 19.2? are really gaining around here. I dont like it.

Recently i priced several houses from different companies. Standard was 24. If you wanted 16 you had to pay a upcharge. :rocketwho How many extra studs would it require on a bungalow...50? 16 OC makes for a much better end result IMHO

Funny thing is they try to sell you on 24 by saying its more energy efficient. Lot of good more efficient is when the walls are weaker.

Just a scam to make more money on. Someplaces don't even sheet the outside walls of houses anymore.
