Framing nail question

Framing a small outbuilding. I have a Paslode cordless framing gun that accepts 2 to 3-1/4 nails .113 to .131" in diameter.

Local big orange store has galvanized 3-1/4 ring shank .120" and galvanized 3-1/4 .131 smooth shank for my Paslode.

Which would you experienced framers go for?

Depends on where you're at, and What you're trying to build !!

Florida or gulf state with hurricane requirements, then surely go with ringshank as they'll stay attached better (hard to remove).

However, Montana and you'll be wanting to take off panels later when you add onto building, then go with smooth.

If it were me, I would get the ring shank.

Building a small workshop in north GA, no coastal requirement. Plans do not call for a special shank.

Smooth shank would be my choice.

If you need to redo something you can pull the nails not have to cut them out.

If you have a framing inspection to undergo then check with the building codes or visit the local building department.

SYP and PT- zinc ring shank

For SPF- coated shank

Check your local building code. Even if you don't need an inspection for what you are doing there is probably a good reason for the code requirement.

If all things are equal I would go ring shank. Because I am not a professional I would probably bump more nails in than necessary anyway so the additional shear strength of the larger smooth shank will not be an advantage while the additional pullout strength of the ring shank might help for less than optimal placement or lack of penetration.

Ring shank or even better, screw nails. If I am framing, I don't plan on taking it apart so use the best gripping/holding nails out there, screw & ring shank.

And you can pull those nails out, just need a longer bar.....

If you are going to be framing with a soft wood, like pine, your gun and your nail are too small. You should be using a 16d 3 1/2" nail. I like using cement coated for framing.
