Framing out for a garage door

I will be framing my new garage next week and I am confused about the rough opening of the doors.

I have a 9' 8" opening between the concrete which i've been told is standard for a 9' door.

The door I am having priced is 9' wide and 8' tall. What is the rough opening I am going after when framing?

I framed to actual door size for every garage door I've ever installed. Then before installation, I add the final trim boards which make the frame just enough smaller than the door so it fits perfectly.
I suggest you measure your door, but my experience tells me that you are likely to find the door is exactly the advertised dimensions.

Thanks for the quick reply, seems 4" extra on each side of the door may have been a little overkill then!

True....9'x8' door gets a 9'x8' opening. I lay the block for a 9'9" opening so the 2x frame brings it down to 9' even. The 1½" on each side leaves room for the door rails.

so I have 10'6'' between the concrete for a 10' garage door. do I frame 2 jack studs on each side and then put 3/4" trim so the opening will now be 9'10-1/2". or do i put 1 jack stud and shim the trim, so opening is exactly 10'
thanks, Mike

I would put one stud down on each side and 1 1/2'' trim, my doors both have
1 1/2" trim up the sides and across the top.

For 1 1/2" trim on my 2X6 walls I used 2X8's.

Run two studs down each side. Put a 5/4 casing around the opening, and put a 2x4 flat on each side for the interior trim. Run a 2x12 across the top as the top trim. Mount your garage door track to the 2x trim. When you finish the interior, put your wallboard up to the 2x material. Get garage door weatherseal, and that will fill the gap between the outside trim and the door.

You are done.

I would like to use 3/4" azek trim, so i guess i will use 1 pressure treated spaced out 3/4" which will give me 10' exactly.
