framing question?

I have to put up a load carrying beam in my house.
It is 3 -1 3/4 lvl's with 2- 1/4 " steel flitch plates. The beam is 9" tall and the existing framing is 2x10. the beam is also 188" long.

I have to place it on 2 existing walls that are there with a second floor up above. The beam is running parallel with the existing beams. I could be wrong ,but I am thinking this is going to be a ***** to slide in. There is only a 1/2" difference in height and it has to fully rest on the walls when done.

Is it ok to clip the corner off of one end to get it up easier? If I just go down from the top of the beam about 3" and take off a 45 degree angle I think that would make it much easier to set it at an angle to get up there. I can push the beam forward a few inches because one wall is an interior wall and one is exterior.

Do you have room to "assemble" it in place, or in the joist "bay" next to where it's going to go? You should be able (with a sledge) to roll up your LVL one at a time in the space of the 2x10. The issue might be the through bolting (or screwing with some GRK type screws) through the 2 flitch plates (hitting the holes). I would guess that there is a bearing wall directly above this beam, and although it would add more work to the job, could you open up the floor and drop it down from above fully assembled?
If this is a permit job, you might ask the guy that will be inspecting it.

Clipping the top corner doesn't sound like much of an issue BUT shear could come into play when the two bearing walls are the only bearing points (no colums). It sounds like someone size this assembly for you, can you check with them to see if it will be a concern? How much bearing width is there on each end and can your chamfer cut be less than the width?

I have to check with the architect if it's going to be a problem. I imagine if he signs off on it the town will also.
Assembling it in place is an option just a time consuming one. I guess I will just have to **** it up and do it correct.
I was asking because I have seen on many masonry buildings how they cut the floor joists on a 45 (fire cut) so they just drop out of the pockets in case of fire. If it wasn't done the whole wall could be pushed out.

I don't know if this is kosher or not, but I had an older house where the joists were shimmed under wher they sat on the sill to be equal height. SO if you trimmed another 1/4" from the bottom edge of each end where they sit on the sill, probably just the depth of the plate the sit on, they will go right in. Then use shims to tap under them to raise it tight to the floor sheeting above.

Again, I am not an engineer, and don't know if that is legal or not, just seen it done. I imagine you would want to make your own hardwood shims as the softwood shims you get at the home center would likely compress...

just an idea...

^^^^A Great Idea!!!! And shear won't be an issue if you say take off 1" and build in place. Still don't think he could get the entire assembly in place hoisted up at one time however.

I don't see where any cutting would be helpful. Sounds like a load bearing wall is being opened up. Generally temporary walls or supports are put in place then the load bearing wall is removed.
Lift the beam to next to the (now removed section) wall(s) to get it close to the right height. Then slide it sideways in to position. Support studs can be installed at the ends after the beam is in place.

Its a 2x4 wall that is carrying the load.

The beam is being put in to my house along wit 2 others. They will form an H when assembled together.
The 2 beams that are parallel are also running parallel with the floor joists. So they are resting on load bearing walls on each end.
The beam that is running perpendicular to them is carrying all the floor joists for the second floor. This one is easy. Just cut the joists and slide it in (I already built temporary walls to support it).
All of the beams are buried in the ceiling .

Assembling in place might be what I have to do. I am sure it will be a pain ,but might be the only option.
