Does anyone know of a good fly repellent or something other than these fly stickies that you hang up? My shop is not AC'ed yet and the doors stay open and the flies this year are out of control. I keep my garbage cans clean and never put any type of food source in them or anywhere in the shop for that matter. It's been very, very aggravating.
Any help?

Evidently, houseflies, being highly edible and defenseless, are nervous types, and don't like to sit still when they see something moving nearby, because it could be a predator. The water bag acts a bit like a lens—try it some time—in which the movements of people in the area are reflected. Even if the fly is too far from the action to see it directly, it can see a shifting of light and dark in the water bag, which it interprets as nearby movement, and it will fly away from the bag.

You have a GOOD ag supply around?

When I lived in southwest Kansas, home to LOTS of commercial cattle feeders, they kept the fly problem under control, there were even several businesses that would do it.

However, where I live now, home of the dairies, they put very little effort into controlling the fly population, even though these dairies are heavily subsidized by government money, and a person would think that the state would consider the sanitation issues.

The difference between privately owned and operated commercial cattle feeders, and YOUR tax dollars at 'work'.

I live on a dairy farm, so I know how it goes with flies. I hate every last one of them and want them to all die a slow painful death. The bag of water trick technically works, but not to the point where anyone would be satisfied with the results. The best thing that I have found is an aerosol called cv80d. The stuff is so bad it doesnt even have a name....just numbers. haha. I actually treated my garage with it yesterday.

For some reason, flies like to return to places that other flies have defecated. You can cut down by ensuring that you keep your surfaces clean from fly ****, then treat it with the cv80d.

You can buy it online, or at a feed store/ag store.

I find that these things work really well (link below). Each summer I hang one at each of the far rear corners of the property, draws the flies in and traps them and I have found that I see far fewer of them around the house, outdoor patio areas, etc. You will be amazed at how many flies that these things will fill up with!

I had to laugh when I saw the posting for the rescue fly trap. My wife brought one home a couple of weeks ago and I filled it with water and hung it in my garage. I missed the part about hanging it outdoors. After about a week it smelled like something had died in my garage. I tore the place apart looking for a dead squirrel or chipmunk. The thing does have a ton of flies in it. Yes it's now outside.

I had a bad fly problem in my shop last summer - tried the sticky paper stuff but it didn't control them. What you apparently have to do is break their breeding cycle and I tried something different this year which seems to have really helped. I bought some stick strips that apply onto a windoe surface - they are about 3" x 6" and are VERY sticky. As the flies land on it, they can't get away. I don't have the name of them handy but they really work well. One application and the fly population has been almost eradicated in the shop.

Do you have chicken, pig dairy or cattle farm nearby? If you do you are likely out of luck.

There used to be something called Golden Malrien or something similar to that that was good at controlling flies. Spread it on the ground and they eat it. Its toxic stuff though. Don't know if its still available.

Just checked... It's Golden Malrin

Eastern Phoebe Flycatchers nest in the overhang in front of my garage, and Wrens in the pole building. Flies dropped like 90% when they moved in, my lucky day! Biting fly season used to make it impossible to work with any doors open, now I leave them open for days at a time.

I use those Rescue traps too, they work well enough. One year I got the can-type and had it setting on top of my shed's roof - until the wind blew it off and it spilled that smelly **** all over the place. That wasn't too bad until the rottweiler got into it and mde the whole house smell like ****.

Agree with this a billion times over, in fact just yesterday hung one outside. We had one in the backyard of our old house, kept it hanging by the trash cans/doggie waste can and it worked wonders. Lately we've had large flies getting into the house by way of the garage door so I hung one yesterday. Checked last night and there are at least two dozen flies already in there, the little bastards!

Best and safest thing to use to control fly proliferation and the cycle is the bag you fill with water and hang in a remote part of your yard. The Rescue Fly Trap is the best -- and I tried them all

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00004TBKM/?tag=atomicindus08-20

You will be very impressed with this product. Hang it near your garbage cans and it will capture all your filth flies. I have 11 dogs and there is ample dog **** on the property. I also use sprinkle food grade Diatomaceous Earth on compost, but also use it in feed, especially bird seed to eliminate the moths. The sticky fly papers works when fresh, but will also capture small birds and insects you would rather keep. The fly paper is best used "indoors" to nail the stray intruder. Poisons are worthless and will do better in harming you than the flies. However, Permethrin in small doses is good as a rub in to keep the flies off your animals.

Edit: I should have read other posts before me -- I'm happy to see others have used and are pleased with the Rescue trap. Use outdoors - it will interrupt fly life cycle and you will rarely notice a stray fly!

You can still buy the Golden Malrin. I can't say how it works on flies but I know it works excellently on raccoons.
Had the buggers at my birdfeeders. they would break them down, make all kinds of noise. Only would run off for 5 minutes when you went outside and yelled at them.
I used the Golden malrin mixed with root beer, the ***** lapped the stuff up.
Then move about 5 ft from the bait and drop over dead. I even had a couple keel over with their heads in the stuff.
Wicked stuff. And yes it is made for controling flies. Be very carefull if you use this stuff.
