We actually have a bit of a robotics project we are working on with my Science Olympiad team and 2 parents expressed concern with lead-solder wire we were using. I am teaching at an ultra-low income school and basically have to buy all my materials myself. We'll see if they will send it to a school instead of a business, as I put their address and information into the sample request.

I'll stick to Kester 44 63/37, but thanks for the info. Lead free ***** to work with.

Multicore! Kester is OK too, though. ;)

I suspect that "lead free" solder was the reason I had to resolder a couple of dozen resistors and zeners inside the instrument cluster of my 04 Silverado. There's nothing like studying each and every solder joint and component with a 10x loupe. There's a day of my life's time that I'll never get back.

I'm not a real big fan of surface mount components either...

lead free solder, in the past, even low lead has caused "tin whiskers" in low power devices. talk about time consuming to find and even when repaired they seem to grow back in spades.

SO far they are not able to re-produce this in the lab, so we'll see.

Those clusters are also known to have bad stepper motors

Yep, I have six new spares in the event that I ever need them. I think that they were only about twenty bucks for the half dozen off of ebay.

This last problem was the high beam indicator LED coming on in the middle of the night while the truck was parked. A previous failure was covered under warranty where the cluster illumination bulbs would come on in the middle of the night, and run the battery down over the course of a few days. That was really annoying.

Both failures were temperature sensitive and due to poor soldering by Delphi. :(

Got mine, and since my previous 44 years have included zero electronics soldering projects, I'm probably set for life.
