Sooner or later we all find some free stuff that we can actually use, not just someone’s junk. Just found this old shop Class work bench, solid maple cabinet with a 3” thick maple butcher block top, weighs a ton. Bonus it comes with two wood working vises, just have to carry it out of the basement. I already have 2 from another school but i can’t turn this down, i love working in these old schools, custodian is happy to get rid of this old stuff, they can’t throw anything away.
So let’s hear of what good stuff has been had for free!

I found a $5 bill on a hallway floor at the gym last week. I actually told the front desk about it, and said that if anyone came asking about $5 that they'd lost, I'd be glad to turn it in. They said to just keep it.

Too much to list...
Good friend works at the local Transfer Station. ;)

But I just got done folding and cutting up white bath towels that came recently. Free shop rags. Pile is about 4ft tall.
Also recently was a free pop-up awning. Someone threw 4 of them away, all good.

Most of my gas powered lawn equipment was free. Usually had them up and running same day with no parts except maybe a fuel line or something.
Echo hedge trimmer, like New. Think it scared the poop out of someone on first use.
Old 1995 Stihl weed wacker
Homelite backpack blower

I too got some great things from the Landfill as a kid. But I am living in a metropolitan city and the landfill is closed for scavenging. I often get out on trash day and sometimes get lucky

My local tractor supply co. remodeled recently (been about a year process). Got a glance of a big dumpster in their side parking lot when I stopped in last Friday afternoon and scored some 8' x 18" deep metal heavy steel shelf grids (have 3" squares) that they use for displaying welders and tools etc.

Got 10 (a few were 24" deep. Grabbed enough of the 8' metal support beams to do, 5 shelves, but no verticals (similar to warehouse racking & they were prob at the bottom). Also grabbed a 3'x3' steel 2 level table (configurable). May make a good welding table or heavy parts work...?

Was not the best example of loading or tie-down in my trailer so I didn't want to push it. Hindsight I should have grabbed more of the 8' beams :sneaky:

I had another great find last year, a house in the neighborhood was being remodeled & was throwing out about 100' of weil Mclain cast iron baseboard. I hit the brakes & helped them take the rest out of the house & right into my truck.

A lot. . .built a lot of stuff out of free doors, windows, and lumber. Some free tables, tanker desk. But the biggest is probably a 1950s Deere 963 farm wagon running gears. Perhaps not a real "find", as I asked a buddy of mine if he had any old equipment rotting away in his fields. he dragged out this old wagon, which I refurbished.

They had a bunch of those in the shelter under my high school that they were removing when I went there back in the mid 1970’s. Cool find.

Wife's family does junk removal. I've gotten so much stuff that way. Workbenches, furniture, high end stereo equipment (Adcom/Boston Acoustics), a Rock Island vise, 16ft aluminum ladder, a little giant ladder, other misc tools, etc.

I can't count how much stuff I had to dispose of working in the schools. CAn't sell it, can't givie it away. "Liability". Such a shame. Entire wood/metal shops full of vintage equipment, sometimes in very good condition.

Recently my client has given me two nice 24" x 36" x 72" locking cabinets and two 24" x 48" x 74" MetroMax mobile lab shelves, all less than three years old and worth about $3k total.

John Deere branded 13mm combination wrench on the county road.
A 100' extension cord put to the curb on trash pickup day [ black electricians tape wrapped about 2inches from the female end, new fitting fixed that.
And late at night going through town after working 3-11 shift, dodged a shadowy object in the street. Got out to find a Delta Radial Arm saw, the top of a portable workstand attached.

Wilton art deco vise
Steel wall mount kitchen cabinets (in my garage now)
Riding mower
Cordless tools
Machinist tools
Snow blower
8hp tiller
Old tanker desk
Toolboxes with tools in them (lots of SO stuff too)
I could barely contain myself when I saw a trailer full of barn or house cleanout stuff arrive

Keep an eye out for used treadmills. They have a lot of useful parts and powerful motors that can easily be speed controlled.

Ladder I posted bout earlier turns out to be a 33ft Werner Aluminum. Was at Lowes the other day and had to have a look-see... $425 :ROFLMAO: OUCH! But it is something I need in this house. My 22footer don't cut it.

Looked around the shop a few min ago and spotted a few kinda recent freebies.

Master brand 70K BTU Kero bullet heater with built in mechanical Thermostat. From the dump and didn't work. $50 is in parts later it works. This darn thing was filthy inside.

Reddy Brand 35K BTU Kero bullet heater Works and just a simple cleaning, filters, pressure set etc.
20220314_212523.jpg

Skat Blast cabinet with dust collector. Was in a buddys basement after he closed shop and wanted it GONE.

Campbell Hausfeld 60gal compressor from same buddy as blast cabinet. This was brought to me in boxes. He said it would only pump to 30 PSI. My thought was run Cap... I was close. Motor was full of mud daubers and the contact plate wouldn't move. Pump got a new valve plate and copper tube from pump to tank, pressure SW, Motor bearings. Think I have $80 into it now and it's in use in the basement garage (Woodshop).

This 2500PSI TroyBuilt Pressure washer was free. Actually worked but leaked at garden hose fitting and needed head gasket. $20 in parts and it will be going to its new home tomorrow
20220314_212412.jpg

15gal fuel barrel and hand pump were free, shoot the 55gal barrel was free too.
20220314_212722.jpg

This Blackhawk floor jack was left in the shop when I bought the house. Was in SAD shape but it deserved to be restored. I restored it and I use it.
20220314_212614.jpg

This cord reel was free. Just put a new cord on it today. These darn things are $100ish new. 25ft cord was $14

The wooden handles on the lids of my grill & two smokers are about to fall apart. All five are 8in long & about 1.5in dia.

Today I found two 6ft sections of wooden closet rail that is the same diameter (in the garage!). All I have to do is cut to length, drill two holes in each one & put some kind of finish on them. They will end up looking better than the OEM handles did when they were new.

I also need to replace the front shelf on the grill & one of the smokers, no luck finding a 6ft piece of 3/4x10in oak for that part of the project though. It's been around 20 years since I replaced the oak shelves on them.

I was driving down Coral Way (SW 23 St) in Miami, and it was a hot humid summer day. There was a guy in an old ratty pick-up filled with junk, on the side of the road, with his hood up. I wasn't particularly busy, I went to a convenience store and bought some bottled water, and drove back to see what he needed, maybe a jump-start or something.

As I had passed him, I saw an old red steel cabinet in the pick-up bed. I was hoping he might want to sell it. I stopped, and gave him the water, and asked about the red cabinet. He was Spanish-speaking, mine is very rudimentary. Turns out he was in-front of a commercial building where he had a contract to mow the property and maintain the landscaping. He was glad to get a cold bottle of water, and I was able to relay my interest in the red cabinet. He said I could have it for free, and there was a small metal chest of drawers, about 1' x 1' x 2' which would be good for small parts. I got them both.

At home, it checked out my no-cost finds. The red cabinet got a plywood back and base (I salvaged the thick metal back for future use), a new wood top with a sacrificial masonite piece, a HFT magnetic strip on the raised rear backsplash, and a plywood shelf inside. The front door was heavy-gauge curved metal, the backside looked like it was designed to hold a slim three ring binder or literature. Anyway, with the gunk dug out of the roller wheels, which I removed and saved (they were large, heavy-duty industrial wheels) and threw on some swivel HFT wheels, it made a nice portable cart. The original paint was nice-enough that a good cleaning sufficed.

The metal chest of drawers got a bit of tweaking to re-align things. It got a coat of Rustoleum grey paint.

After having them for a bit, I realized I didn't need either of them as part of my limited space in my 2 car garage, both quickly sold on CL for > I had in them.

My brother in law. No, not saying I got him for free. But when he gets a "gotta get rid of it" bug up his ****, I'm ready. He gave me a nice fully functional three burner gas grill a few years back because he no longer grills out. Just last week my sister said their son-in-law got them a great deal on a 55" Sony flat screen, so I ended up with their 50" Sony flat screen for my shop garage. Packer games on the big screen in my shop this coming fall.

Garage door opener from one of the neighbors, mine had just burned out the logic board. I salvaged the board from that one and used the 2 to make 1 working one. My work bench was a trash find a few houses down. I have about a half dozen metal wire shelves, all came from the neighborhood. None of this was super valuable, but I did have somebody tell me to dispose of a LS3 shortblock that was in a warehouse bay they were cleaning out, I was happy to give it a new home.

Just found some nice old school lockers, 6' high, old school steel, just waiting for the ok to help get rid of them. They're not even beat up, might of been extras that were never used, will paint to match tool boxes, now I don't have to wait for the hf ones.

The summer of 1980, I found a very large orange Wilton vise laying in the middle of a very rough Arkansas dirt road. I gave it to my brother in law when I rejoined the Army in 1982. He still has it.
